It includes some bands I wasn't about to touch with a barge pole (Hurricaine no.1; Menswear, Marion) but it is undeniably a very britpop list. Maybe one or two questionable inclusions though that veer more towards shoegaze or space rock territory, but on the whole it seems true to britpop. I preferred to it Pitchfork's britpop list anyway.
Here's another seminal one that I'm not too struck on, though I liked it for a while when I was younger.
Although it is generally seen as britpop, I prefer the term post-britpop for the Verve's Urban Hymns. Compared to the classic era britpop, it is more sincere, melancholic and with less overtly British influences. There is also more than a hint of psychedelic/ space rock sounds on this album, presumably in continuation from their earlier records. Overall, this album feels like a midpoint between the feelgood singalongs of "What's the story morning glory" and the more maudlin stadium anthems of Coldplay. It's no surprise that Chris Martin is a big verve fan.
What I like about this album is the production. The effects laden guitars sound great and add interesting textures throughout the record. It's a pretty album and Bittersweet Symphony remains a rousing opener. My problems are that a lot of the album is quite mid-paced, with not so interesting songs on the whole. I'd rather it was about 20mins shorter as well.
I could happily listen to this again, but I don't think it will be top of my list for a while.

New Wave by the Auteurs
Back on track with this one. More than any other album it is cited as the first of britpop. "Back in Denim" says hello, but yeah, this is even more definitively britpop than Denim's album from the previous year.
The Auteurs are pretty understated in their approach, despite being one of the neo-glam bands to surface in 93. Where other britpop bands are generally about simple hooks and big guitars, Luke Haynes' band are about songs and they serve up some excellent ones on this debut. Haynes' come across as a more cynical and world-weary Ray Davies, with sweet melodies being undercut by acutely barbed lyrical observations. So many are quotable but I particularly like "Got my mantra for life/ got my karma/ and a showgirl bride" on the opener Showgirl.
The Auteurs may have never had much commercial success, but for me this remains one of the great britpop albums for those "in the know". It's a bit snobby to criticise Urban Hymns and then praise this, perhaps. But I definitely prefer this kind of album.

This notorious album is by one of my favorite electronic artists. He's in my top 100. If you don't know him, he's along the lines of Aphex Twin, and even made an album with Aphex Twin called Mike and Rich... Expert Knob Twiddlers. It's quite a classic electronic album. But anyway, he was asked to do this Remix album of the Auteurs. Little did they know, he disliked the Auteurs.
. I would disagree with him though, because after I bought this album I listened to The Auteurs album and I thought it was pretty good. Not great but good.
I'd not heard of that. Ive heard of mu-zig but not heard his music. Looks like those remixes are based on the Auteurs second album, which I don't know really well. I guess it's another good example of dance/Britpop crossover again.
I'd put the Auteurs debut in the great category, but I guess it's down to personal taste. It took me several listens but I find the songwriting quite unique and very rewarding.

Edit: just finished listening. Sounds as good as the debut. Underground Movies, Daughter of a Child, New French Girlfriend...great songs. Even the titles are great!
