Regarding Garth Brooks, he was such a hot act from when he first came out. Self titled and No Fences are both great. After that it goes downhill but the stuff from the early years is so great it moves him up the all time ranks for me. He's like country's Pixies.

I've actually met a few award winning country songwriters. Charlie Black resided in Port St. Joe; he wrote a few old songs I haven't heard of but he's in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame or something like that. He used to come in and eat at a restaurant I worked at regularly with his wife Dana Hunt, who co-wrote "Check Yes or No" and "Write This Down", both big hits for George Strait. They took part in a songwriters festival that came through town one year while I was bartending at a sports bar in which I also met a co-writer of Garth Brooks' "Friends In Low Places" among a few others I can't remember.

A lot of the best stuff I've heard on this oldies station I'm not even sure who the singer is.

I've always been a big fan of older country music, stuff like Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton's early stuff, Marty Robbins, I love that stuff.

Modern country pop I'm not quite as into, but I do love where country music is going now. Artists like Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, Margo Price, Chris Stapleton, and plenty others are all fantastic. Daniel Romano had a great country album (If I've Only One Time Askin') a couple years back. I'm really excited to see where these artists take country music.

Because my newest favorite singer is my late beautiful precious Steve Sanders of the Oak Ridge Boys, I've been listening to their material that was led by him in 1987-1995. This was their first song led by him to go to radio and it went all the way to #1 thirty years ago.

God bless you and his family always!!!

Holly

P.S. Three days ago would've been the 76th birthday of my other late beautiful precious, Billy Joe Royal that is, I love him so much still too.

Nice! I've been listening to this one quite a bit since it's from 1992. Obviously a big influence on Kacey Musgraves. Great down-to-earth, home spun songs with witty wordplay.

I canโ€™t really do country-pop. There are some artists I really like that might be considered country, or contemporary folk, or Americana:

Emmylou Harris
Patty Griffin
Buddy and Julie Miller

kd Lang
Lyle Lovett

I like Willie Nelsonโ€™s โ€œStardustโ€ album, but thatโ€™s not all that country.

Borderline country:
Bonnie Raitt
John Hiatt

Confessions:
I like the Dixie Chicks album, โ€œHomeโ€ (but no others).
O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack from around the same time.
Some Linda Ronstadt
Some John Denver

Some recent artists I like: Sarah Jarosz, Aoife Oโ€™Donovan.

I enjoyed a Flatt and Scruggs album at Carnegie Hall, and generally enjoy hearing bluegrass players.

Me too, I also like Flatt & Scruggs and all the old 1950s style bluegrass with real super-fast pickin' and stuff. I know there's such a thing as Modern Bluegrass, but it's just awful. Alison Krauss and shit. It's way too slow and sounds like every other piece of shit record that comes out. I especially like the kind that has guitars AND banjos. Here's some awesome Flatt & Scruggs albums.

Lyle Lovett by Lyle Lovett

Country had gotten downright hokey. Fallen on the "hard times" that had become such a cliche in their songs. Yup. It was lightweight fluff. The mid 80s is were things really started changing. Where country became respectable again and even the punks started listening & (more importantly) stealing to eventually create alt country as we know it.

The two biggest reasons for the sea change were Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle who forced their way into Nashville, hit their bars & stole their girls. Both released stunning, fully formed debuts back in 1986. I think Lyle's is a bit better, but I'd be damned if I don't have both these in my collection and high up on my '86 chart. Essential stuff especially for those who want to get into country & are looking for a place to start.

I like this. Interesting songwriter, and wordsmith.

Trouble In Mind by Hayes Carll

I guess heโ€™s following in this tradition.
