2018 Albums

Hayden · 2018-01-01T13:23:54-05:00

It's that time of year again folks — a new one (2018 if you're still keeping score). Personally, I loved the music output of 2017. Solid, consistent, innovative, plus the duds have already been erased from my mind and I can't wait for Arcade Fire's follow-up to Reflektor. Here's to 2018 :) This thread will be a general discussion on new and upcoming releases this year, and perhaps any goals/wishes you wish to see in the world of music. Take some time to share singles, EPs, albums, mixtapes, whatever you wish. I'll start off my sharing some of my anticipated releases: Earl Sweatshirt Vampire Weekend My Bloody Valentine Sky Ferreira Tune-Yards Father John Misty Chromatics (hopefully) Blood Orange Danny Brown No Age Iceage SOPHIE David Byrne Natalie Prass Lucy Dacus Grouper U.S. Girls Speedy Ortiz Andrew WK Spiritualized Rhye & a hopefully a slew of artists I know nothing about And it looks like 2018 already has a familiar face :) Jeff Rosenstock has released the follow-up to his excellent 2016 album SORRY. Looking forward to giving it a spin later. POST- by Jeff Rosenstock Cheers everyone, here's to a new year.

Been pretty obsessed with these lately...

A Laughing Death In Meatspace by Tropical Fuck Storm

Latest evolution of the Drones. Socio-political Aussie art punk.

Lump by LUMP

Laura Marling + Mike Lindsay (Tuung/Throws). Perfect lyrical art pop.

1984 by Joan Of Arc

Two decades in, and there's still no predicting what Joan of Arc does next. Odd, witty, unconventional, minimal indie rock

Minus by Daniel Blumberg

70s style singer/songwriter album resembling Bill Fay

i listened to all four of these today, and these are superb recommendations. three of them are definitely going into my chart, and i'm teetering on the fourth.

First 10 since TPAB possibly?

Money Store, TPAB, To Be Kind and now Kids See Ghosts.

I thought it's an awesome move from him, I can totally see how it would appeal to his tastes. Will definitely help cement this as a cult favourite down the line, I think.

I've honestly been listening to his album like twice a day since the stream and I'm not with it bored yet. I don't see it elavating from my good-to-great rating, but the album just makes me damn happy, and seeing it get a 10 makes me even happier.

Some quick thoughts on some other releases,

The Snail Mail debut seemed really dull to me, confused why Pitchfork is holding it in such high regard. There was one song with a trumpet that I can remember deviating from the typical indie sound, the rest was pretty melodicless and forgettable, don't see myself giving it another spin.

Similar thoughts on the new Natalie Prass album, but it seemed to have some actual dynamics. Will likely set it aside for a second hearing for another time, I think there's something more under the surface.

I was disappointment with LUMP until song three (I think) kicked in and then it just totally clicked with me. Really cool project, unlikely collaboration that works really well, and isn't something I've 'sonically' heard before. Was too short and inconsistent, but really excited to see where they take it next. So much better than Marling's recent work, even glimpses of Jenny Hval in there sometimes.

Tropical Fuck Storm is pretty wild, very solid release. Not really my jam, but some unpredictable instrumentation and well written lyrics. Felt pretty long but maybe that's because almost everything else I've been listening to lately has been around 30 minutes hahah.

Believe the hype:

Hope Downs by Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever
The enthusiastic reviews by Pitchfork, AllMusic and many others are all spot on: this is a fantastic guitar album and 2018 breathes a lot of fresh year into guitar music, not only via the old guys issuing very fine New albums but also via never bands like this one.

I am so excited with this album! It's like Gal Costa had a daughter with Terry Riley.
