I keep all my years lists to ten albums, and I don't publish them until January of the following year, so I can't say I really have this issue.

It's pretty rare that I'll hear more than 10 albums that I really love in a year. I'll only put an album on my yearly chart that I think is worth charting. So I keep it to 10, then when it becomes too hard to exclude #11, I'll expand it out to 20 and so on.

I've only done this the last couple years or so, but it gives me peace of mind knowing I don't have to meticulously rank everything, and down the line there's usually no culling necessary.

I like this method.

In this age of streaming, my yearly list has become a place to store things I want to return to, otherwise I might not think to revisit them. Over the course of the year, things will drop off because I no longer feel the need to return to them, and things will climb to the top of the list that Iโ€™ve become quite attached to, and will no doubt buy a physical version of for posterity.

Ten is probably a pretty accurate number for the things Iโ€™m really attached to in any given year, but 35 is good for covering all the things I like to return to, as well as cover all the genres of things I like.

All I see is quality creep. The more albums you listen to, the more it requires to score high. This leads to lists being unfairly rigid and favoring old shit over anything new. I don't have the cure, just the curse. All of you are going to get old too.

EDIT: Friday night. Too much beer. Valid point, wrong post to make it on. Move along.

I'm almost at 70 and these aren't just flavor of the week things for me. I genuinely enjoy these records. I'm a bit more meticulous for some and quantifying enjoyment in stars is hard but every yearly list I have has the criteria of requiring four stars minimum to chart.

I feel like Iโ€™m at a bit of a crossroads. Iโ€™ve generally wanted to limit my lists to what I own in physical format, and to limit my entire collection so that I can reasonably revisit everything. However, the streaming age means that I can find more music that I genuinely like.

Iโ€™m contemplating not buying any physical music beyond this year, letting my lists grow longer and changing my mindset a little.

By the way, I enjoyed Caitlyn Smith and Lonker See from visiting your list earlier in the year. Cheers.

That's awesome. I don't know if people even look at my lists anymore (no ratings, qq). My list has grown a lot since then, but I still like those records quite a bit even if they are on the lower end of my chart.
