This was pretty good. This is an era, time, and genre that I feel like I know a lot about, and I knew I had heard of this band before, but I had never listened. I liked the lo-fi production, and I believe this band is only a two piece? Which is always cool. It will make my chart for that year at some point.
I haven't heard this before but I have seen the movie. Great movie! To be trite though, the music didn't stand out to me then and it doesn't now. Seriously though I struggle to get into ambient music, and film scores on their own, so not great potential to start off with, although I am starting to get into krautrock a bit more. There were a couple of tracks I liked (track 3 & 4) but the 16 minute one bored me. After that the damage had been done and I guess it was okay but nothing more. To be honest though, after a few beers as the sun goes down was probably not the best time to listen to this album.
Very zany hip-hop album. On the plus side, it was never uninteresting. On the negative side, there's a bunch of stuff he tries here that doesn't work for me. But in general, this was a pleasant listen. 3/5.
I actually really enjoyed this album. Really laid back, easy to listen, really pretty, has some kind of dream pop vibes to it. Great record, thanks for the recommendation.
This one was tough for me. I like a LOT of what he's doing in here, but ultimately it's lacking "punch" or impact for me. I liked the pianos, the occasional twangy guitar, and I appreciate how ahead-of-his-time this is. Like some other bigger names from this time, though, I tend to like the bands who were their influences, and the band who came later who were influenced by them. Granted, in John Cale's case I wouldn't be surprised that modern artists like Sufjan Stevens or much of the good dream pop being influenced by this, so his influence I would think is a pretty long window.
That's as good a reason as any to give me this album Rocka. It's a good album title and cover (you know...because of the purple hippyness). I remember the single Shock Me. It got decent airplay on the radio station I listen to at work but it never appealed enough to listen to the album. But it's a good indicator of what the album is like because that's exactly what you get. A consistent album without much variety where all the songs sound similar to Shock Me. While decent enough Baroness fit into that category of being in the middle ground of a little bit too heavy for my tastes...but not heavy enough for my tastes. I prefer one or the other when it comes to this type of music.
I liked this album, I think its one i need to become more familiar with, i have a feeling it will grow on me more with repeat listenings. that said i liked it and it was definitely in my comfort zone of the type of stuff i like. i am a guitar guy, i love good guitar work.
