There were four tracks I’d rate as good, a few I consider to fall flat, and a few that are sort of irritating. I’d say it’s textbook uneven. “Another Day” and “Let Her Go” are sickly sweet, over-exposed pop that I had to rebuff. The more middling tracks need a stronger vocal presence to carry them, which the duo can’t provide. Musically, it’s okay, but there isn’t anything brilliant. It was probably unfair for this to follow a Yello marathon.
I’ll maybe give it another try a different day, different context. “Go Away” is my big takeaway.

I have listened to a handful of Swans albums from Young God through to The Glowing Man and after two songs I thought this was going to be the best Swans album I've heard so far. Those first two songs were awesome. After that not everything worked as well. I think sometimes the songs took too long to get to where they were going but gosh the payoff was always great. At least with their drone there was usually something to listen to as well, and then they often surprised me, going where I don't expect the song to go, so I end up om on the edge of my seat listening to Swans albums. This still might be the best I've heard....I would need to listen to My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky again as I haven't heard that for a long time (pre my BEA rating days). See that's the thing with Swans albums. They are so long, and I like to listen to albums in one sitting while doing not much at all, and 2 hours for that is not always easy to find, so even though I like most of their albums they tend to be one off listens that I don't return to...as well as wanting to listen to the one's I haven't heard yet. 8/10, and 8/21 for 2012.
Time to go out of my comfort zone again (I think...half of these I don't know what they are 🫢🤣 )

Man I have to go back to listen to Nas. Hell at some point I do want to revisit Illmatic again to see if it is a lot better than the last time I listen to it. Then again I thought that album is great. And that fits with the album I'm talking about right now because I thought Stillmatic was great. Not only were the sounds really good, I'd argue the second half makes this album a more noticeable moment for 2000's hip-hop but also how at this time Nas was still on his A game. If there was a complaint and yeah this is me being a broken record, I wished a few of these songs had more meat or more musical elements to keep these few tracks from sounding somewhat stale. I am looking at Ether. Otherwise this was great. I wish this was higher on the list, but that's how it goes.

Before I give Bay my pick I need to point out that Chief is going to be stuck for a bit and for Jameth the whole Slipknot thing is just an album basis. I do argue that Tool are excellent performers and when I get to 1996, I will hope that my revisit is swell for Aenima. Though I do want to mention that Slipknot's recent release has gotten positive response from some internet critics, so we will see.

Cocteau Twins have been high on my list of artists to delve into. Between their name, their era, and their reputation, they’ve developed into some giant sitting on a mountain, patiently awaiting a visit from me. I also had it in my mind, for some reason, that they made purely electronic music and had no idea they came from a new wave/post-punk/gothic background. This is what you get when you put no effort into learning something about an act that interests you.
So, this compilation culls songs from their first three albums and some EPs. They have a really cool sound...musically, the songs feel like collages of sounds, seemingly unrelated in rhythm or in some other way, stacked upon one another. That effect works extremely well for “Wax And Wane”, it has a dense, anxious musical background underpinning cryptic lyrics. I have no damn idea what she’s singing about, even after looking up lyrics, which you have to, because her Scottish accent is apparently so heavy that she sounds as if she’s singing in another language. But, that works to lend the music manic charm.
I’m off to start working through their discography, if I can stop replaying “Wax And Wane”. That bass melody is incredible, and the way it abandons rhythm duty altogether is filthy. It could be an octave pedal, though.

Maybe I've gotten used to it, or maybe quality from the genre has finally clicked with me; but most likely it was the few drinks I've had putting me in the mood for something strange and different, and listening on a cold winter's night around an open fire, that meant this went down well. Better than expected. Another case of music, set, and setting all combining just right. I liked this much more than Returnal. 8/10 and 8/21 for 2011.
Jameth Wax And Wane is one of the many great Cocteau Twins songs. Enjoy their discography.

It's records like this that make me quite happy that I decided to look through the yesteryears for albums. Because this is such a welcoming an intoxicating extension within the genre of shoegaze. To the point where my only complaint of this album is that there is one track that doesn't sound congruent to the rest of the album. But even then I enjoy that track. And the rest is just bliss. So in the context of my canon list, it is top 10 material. Grade wise it is a 95 but could be a 100 in the future. Also with that list, I might be moving Confield up a little more because I had the realization that I'm not only fascinated with that album but I think it's a 100. But I think I'll get to that later on.

I tend to forget that it the cold seasons in countries like Australia. Also glad you adored Replica. That album is considered one of his best albums.

A compact EP with very mellow instrumentals. I was really enjoying this until the grotesque last track, which made me angry as a disabled person. Idgaf if it's "sarcastic" - it totally ruins the music and makes me think less of him. 2.5/5.

I had to manually enter the link to this album, strange.
I think this is one of the first 80s bands I’ve listened to that truly had one foot in the 90s already, aside from the Pixies and R.E.M.. “Does It Float” contains all the elements of a Nirvana song...the hard rock riffs, heavy distortion and feedback, and the vocals that alternate between a soft drone and raging screams. Of course, the more I listen, the more I’m convinced that the 80s were more innovative and more interesting the the 90s ever were. These earlier bands were much freer with song structure and form, and this album is a great example of that. I’m off to check out their next two.

Jim O’Rourke must not care what anyone thinks of him to release that EP, because I’d sure be embarrassed to sing those songs. It could be Juvenalian satire, but who needs that satirized, anyways?
Bay, I’m picking Dwight Yoakam, because it’s the first country album I’ve seen come up in the game. Enjoy some cowpunk-ish, rockabilly-driven honky tonk.
