I have heard a bit of The Orb here and there in the '90s, but I wasn't really into that sort of music back then. Not that I am now either but I'm a bit more open to it than I used to be. After a coupe of minutes I liked what I was hearing and had to turn it up. That's a good sign. There were some really interesting sounds and things going on there. It was taking me away somewhere, I'm not sure where, somewhere spacey and futuristic. But it just couldn't keep me there for the whole song. Then the same thing happened for the next three songs. So while it was a good effort and nearly succeeded it doesn't quite pull it off. Still a good 7.5/10 and 36/73 for 2015.

I was considering giving you Rites Of Spring but looking into it, it appears it is just every song from their self- titled album, plus one extra song in the middle from a rerelease of the album, and an EP of theirs from 1987 (although these tracks aren't on the BEA database for this album). Also most sites seem to have it listed as a 1991 release so I'm not sure what's happening there.

This is a record that I do find strange and engaging by its sound palette but also has qualities that for me can be a double edge sword. The first one which I could argue could be less of a deal breaker would be the length of these songs. Most of these tracks while have this up and done quality to it, I kinda wish some of those track were given more room to bloom and become four or five minute tracks that are loud and proud. But that could be a thing I get over with time. Now the harder pill that I will admit would be hard for some listeners and was quite noticeable would be how the mixing within this album is the visual example of how you could see through a window even when it is dusty and somewhat foggy but you wish you had Windex on you to clean it. Like most of this album is good hell even great. But that caveat is one of those details that if it got worked on could bring this to even higher highs.
So while I did enjoy it and believe it's a quality project, I feel like John has other records that meet those three qualities of its sound palette, mixing and song lengths to perfection. Or can find work around those three details.
Which does mean while I would give this album a 75, I'd recommend it.

@Purple: I coincidently listened to Rites Of Spring’s debut shortly after listening to Dinosaur Jr.’s, and I can say that outside of the long closing track, it was nails on a chalkboard. So, bullet dodged. 🙏
I also moved that comp (back) to 1991, where it belongs. Someone erroneously changed it to 1985 a few years ago.
I had doubts about an 80s pop band pulling off 60s psych pop. The band must have anticipated such doubts, given the cryptic marketing tactics they used. I don’t know that it quite passes for a lost 60s album...there are a few elements that betray the 60s aesthetic they wanted, such as the bassist’s melodic mannerisms, or the droning nature of some of the tracks. But, their criteria were rock solid, and the result is an excellent coalescence of both intended and unintended elements. Nothing falls flat, as you’d expect. They absolutely nail the pop aspect of the genre...they’re catchy songs. They also nail the swirling experimentalism of psych, there are plenty of lush, interesting textures. Great album, especially the droney “Your Gold Dress”.

Wow, what a great album! I can't decide whether I like this or his sophomore album better. I could see either making it into my overall chart if they grow on me with time. Absolutely bananas composition, overflowing with ideas. The only area where I see room for improvement are the vocals, but even those are really good. Who knows though, maybe my opinion of what could be improved will change once I understand more of the lyrics. Also, the ending is such a tease lol. 4/5

^^^I probably should have let Psonic Psunspot play when 25 O'Clock finished, but for whatever reason I wanted to play XTC's debut. I'll get to Psonic soon.
If this doesn't send you running to buy a boombox, nothing will. What a blast. The beats are primitive, stark, and relentless. The raps are fine...not over reliant on expletives...a little corny in spots, but I can't really fault Cool J, since he was only 16 when he cut this record. Reading up on it, this album was a game changer, so it probably doesn't deserve to be blown all the way back to 91 in 1985.

Atomic Bomb is pure catharsis. 100/100. Try playing the 14 minute version of "Rapper's Delight" as a prelude, the album opens right up. I think that's what happened for me.

I can see why you would love this album Luigii. A good quality funky album that was fun to listen to. Although the lyrics were perfectly fine I preferred the couple of songs where he was singing in what I presume is his natural tongue, rolling his Rs and shit. And I'm sure he dips into French a bit in one of the songs. Apparently this guy is 50 years old? Good on him! 7.5/10 and 17/22 for 2012.

There are worse things Townshend could have done from his position of privilege (and in the 80's, no less) other than record an album that addresses racial and economic inequality. I'll commend him for that...even if his view is a bit lofty at times, but he does have enough experience to give some street-level insight.
The album is a very mixed bag, musically. The musicianship is tight, and I found some of the guitar and drum work to be very good. But, the production on several tracks is badly dated, and the largely flat songwriting isn't near enough to carry it. "Face The Face" and "I Am Secure" were pretty enjoyable, but I can't elevate them beyond that. I also enjoyed "Brilliant Blues" the first time I listened to it, but my opinion of it waned after a second listen. I'd say that finding this album more enjoyable would require too many listens for my opinion of it to wax, instead.

I was a fan of Who Is William Onyeabor?, so I'm not surprised I loved this. They share only one track, the excellent title track. This album is a fuzzy, funky, psychedelic odyssey with great lead vocals and even better female backing vocals. He really makes the most of the keys. 4/5.

Musically this is a great record. The only thing that holds this record from being better though I might get over this over time is the vocals. These vocals have this whine to them where like Oasis can be an acquired taste where I could see some listeners not worry or bother them. While for me, they stick out and do sour the album as a whole. But who knows. Maybe over time this won't be so much as an issue. Grade:80
