Bay listen to The Campfire Headphase. Also what happened to the Ocarina of Time option?

I cycle through from top ranked chart 1 to 50. It'll probably be back soon. Echoes is a little over 2.5 hours in length.

Thank you for letting me know Bay.

198XAD by Mega Drive

I haven't heard much synthwave really, just bits and pieces because my eldest son listens to it a little bit, and a couple of albums here and there, This is probably more energetic than what I've come across before, with an electro-industrial sound that does provide some interesting noises and things going on, but, and I hate saying this, maybe I'm too old to really enjoy this. Tracks 4 & 5 were actually quite good with a trippy feel to them, but the rest just sort of blurred into a samish, passable retro-futuristic sound that didn't really click with me. I can imagine this being good background while gaming or out on some great party drugs, but neither of those are my thing. Still it's always cool to hear something different I've never heard of before ,from genres I don't usually explore. 6.5/10, and 66/71 for 2014.

Gotan Project is an interesting listen Luigii.

Teens Of Denial by Car Seat Headrest

I struggle pretty mightily with the music of my fellow millennials, which has always struck me as the musical equivalent of Newspeak. I don't think this album changes that for me. It has a few somewhat catchy songs, but there isn't enough happening musically to hold my attention. The extended intro to "Vincent" was sort of krautrockin', and I was hoping for a bit more of that throughout the album, but I didn't get it.

These guys are apparently from northern VA (where I spent a few years), large swaths of which are essentially Pleasantville. A lot of the lyrics seem to deal with the diffidence I associate with some people from the area, as well as the mechanisms they use for coping with the banality or superficiality I see as components of the culture of that area. I don't know whether or not that was the intent of the lyrics, or if I'm just being cynical, or imagining it, but that's the sense I get and I found it interesting.

I listened to bits of that album, Purple, it's definitely extremely engaging. I wanted to give you Heaven And Earth last time, but I already gave you a movie length album recently, and you don't seem to be huge on jazz.

Try Boards of Canada.

The Campfire Headphase by Boards Of Canada

This is a different sound for BoC, backing off the denser brand of IDM and opting for a more spacious, mellow vibe. I like it quite a bit, but as of first listen I don't find it super special. Still waiting for a BoC album to knock my socks off, although I've liked everything I've heard. 3.5/5.

I feel like the average artist today works from a musical vocabulary that is more limited than what the average artist worked from 40 or 50 years ago, in the same way that Newspeak works from a limited vocabulary when compared to Oldspeak. That's a generalization that obviously doesn't extend to all artists or genres, but most new music gives me this impression of bland off-brandedness, sort of like how the lousy cigarettes in 1984 weren't nearly as good as the cigarettes that used to be available (as another analogy).

Hmm. I guess my question is what's the pool that we're drawing the average from? All music in the top 100 for the year on BEA? All music on the radio? All music that has been commercially released?

If we go with the latter, there's just a lot more music than there used to be, largely because of the democratizing effect of the internet and the erosion of record label dominance. So with fewer gatekeepers and less quality control, there is also a lot more bad music out there. Perhaps commercially-released music is on average worse than it used to be as a result. The artists that in the past would just be local cover bands have their stuff on Spotify. However, I would argue that there is also more good music that might not have impressed a gatekeeper, and that makes up for it.

The genres that are being considered in this assessment also make a huge difference, as well as how far off the beaten track the consideration of a genre goes. Assessing primarily popular records from rock, folk, and jazz will give a far different picture than assessing the hidden gems of those genres, and will also give a far different picture than focusing primarily on electronic and hip-hop.

I'm talking mainstream folk, alternative, and indie albums I've listened to, from the last two decades, mainly. I've made some pretty meager attempts to tackle these recent years, trying out some of the stuff that is highly regarded here or elsewhere, like Bon Iver, The Antlers, Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, etc. My experience with these recent years isn't deep reaching.

I hear a lot of tepid melodies that only range a few notes, ultra-standard chord progressions operating out of a very basic key like C or F or Am, experienced bassists and drummers playing flavorless, ultra-basic accompaniment.

I really want to tackle these decades in full at some point, but the albums I've heard (outside of world and classical) have mostly served as repellant. I agree that there's good music to be found, but I still haven't figured out where to turn.

The Smiths by The Smiths

I may just be more familiar with this band at this point, but I feel like I enjoyed this more than I enjoyed The Queen Is Dead. I really enjoyed Morrissey's vocals, even on "Miserable Lie", and particularly on "This Charming Man" and "Still Ill" I'm still underwhelmed with the rest of the group's sound, apart from the bassist. Marr's playing is excellent, but his squeaky clean tone doesn't necessarily do it for me. His unwillingness to step away from that tone forces too many songs to bleed together and it hampers the album.

I want to check out Morrissey's solo work...I think it's possible I'll enjoy it more.

Listen to Paix, Bay. I'm gonna replay it, as well, because I seem to remember liking it but I can't recall it.
