Blaine L. Reininger Broken Fingers.

I'm not adding the album for this one right now. It was pretty decent. Blaine was the violinist for the Avant-Gard band Tuxedomoon, so if you know what their music sounds like, then you can kind of get an idea of what this sounds like. An eclectic group of songs that are unique, but not necessarily memorable. His album "Night Air" is supposed to be better, but I figured that I would start from the beginning.

Jameth, try Lisbon by Keith Fullerton Whitman.

Women by Women

A great album! I'm a fan of Preoccupations, with Viet Cong being my favourite album of theirs, so it was good to hear where they sort of started. I've now listened to the whole Women/Viet Cong/Preoccupations discography on BEA and it's all really good. I look forward to listening to this again. 8.5/10, 7/16 for 2008, and 53/100 for 2000's.

Isla by Portico Quartet
An excellent nu jazz record. A bit of electronica, a bit of ambient, and a lot of modern experimental jazz. That's my favourite style of 21st century jazz. 8.5/10

Slapp Happy Or Slapp Happy by Slapp Happy

I've heard the German singer Dagmar Krause with a couple of artists, Henry Cow and Art Bears, but Slapp Happy was her first group. I think. Anyway, this album was OK. It was a mix of Art Pop and Cabaret music, which was fine, but never really made an impact on me.

Blu & Exile is my next choice for you on Hayden's chart.

Miss Machine by The Dillinger Escape Plan

That was a great chart to explore. I might have been hoping for a few of the others for the last pick but this ended up being a great choice. Dillinger has always been in the neighbourhood of music I listen to but from what I've heard of them I thought they would be too heavy and growly for me. So this is the first album I've heard of theirs, and judging by this they are actually not that far removed from what I like, just a bit more extreme, and with more growling, screaming and shouting mixed with the singing, and often all in the same song. I can often find growling vocals a bit much to handle, especially when it dominates over the music, but during this album it was the music I was really enjoying and the variety of vocals were mostly adding to the appeal. And the music was really worth listening to, powerful and atmospheric, and always interesting. There were some great songs on here - Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants, and the run from Sunshine The Werewolf to Phone Home. I was surprised how much I got into this album. 8/10, and 17/46 for 2004.

The Pilgrim sounds like something you would like Rocka.

The Pilgrim by Jason Lescalleet

^^^I expanded and re-arranged that chart somewhat, so it's a little less awful now. I didn't have a ton to add to it, but hopefully you haven't heard some of them.

Good! Glad you dug Dillinger. Musicianship is off the charts with those lads.

The Pilgrim by Jason Lescalleet

I'd listened to part of this one before, but when I started to do my watch laters, I figured I'd save the whole thing for later.

This one is a slow burn. I mean a reeeeeeaaaallll slow burn, but it was definitely worth the payoff. Composed while his father was dying, Lescalleet's dismay certainly shows on this record. about 50 some odd minutes of slowly building turmoil eventually explode near the back 20 minutes or so of the album with a great noise wall that illustrates the frustration that someone dealing with death eventually goes through. What I just talked about in my diary with the "I Am A Lake of Burning Orchids" album, what seperates good noise from bad noise is dynamics. At least to me.

Nothing else to say really. Great album, but will probably take a few more listens to fully have my head around it.

Tap, if you're out there, could you tell us why this one ranks so highly on your chart? I'd be interested to hear.

Purple, Sibylle Baier is an interesting private press/home recording release.

Lisbon by Keith Fullerton Whitman

So, this seems to use the same build and release structure used by GSYBE, with the 14 or so minutes of synth squelches and field recordings that close out the album also seeming to follow suit. It kind of took me by surprise, with the first 15-20 minutes not really giving any indication of the impending buildup...I figured it was gonna carry on with the initial minimalist, ambient soundscape. Still, I didn't find it to be all that enthralling of a journey. I've got a lukewarm opinion of GSYBE (which has unfairly spilled over to this album), and this was really just a more electronic version of of the same format that tiresomely drones from one work to another on their albums. Ignoring the macro structure, there wasn't much at the smaller scales that I found to be more than mildly interesting.

Let me know if I'm overlooking something, Chief.
