Right now I'm spinning the new Thundercat because I've already heard the other three albums. It sounds like he's gotten better, but at his current level of talent he'd never reach my top 100 chart. I've actually had a lot of doubts about this album because the most soulful Thundercat album, Apocalypse, had a couple of serious issues. One half had a lot of spirit, but the tracks were too simply written to stand out so it was essentially starting out as a typical modern soul album with spirit as an edge. And the other half had beet writing but it felt like the spirit had gone away like a trade-off. This album's different. There's a whole new side and a stronger soul to Thundercat's new album, and there are stronger traces of Sly & the Family Stone, a personal favorite. Yeah, this is my favorite Thundercat album. I might as well state my current thoughts on the new Paysage D'Hiver. Someone uploaded a youtube video of Im Wald and as I expected it's not much different from his other albums. The atmosphere is just as strong as the atmosphere on Winterkaelte, but I think two hours might be enough overkill to knock it down at least half a star. At least the black metal this year is starting out well. Yeah just finished it and it's not nearly as out there as Bone Machine. But i liked it a lot, more than When the Pawn after a single listen. Need to give it a more dedicated listen when I'm not distracted so I can focus more on the lyrics but I agree the songwriting is really engaging throughout.
I totally agree. While I enjoyed the album, I didn't find it to be as groundbreaking as everyone suggested. I also saw it compared to Rain Dogs and in turn superior to it. Like I said, greatly enjoyed the album, but won't but it in that rarefied air. Am I missing something?
Man this album even after around 10 listens has still been one of those records that just hits me in a state of euphoria. Don't know if a pop album could knock if off it's throne but we will see.
You're not. Pitchfork gave it a 10, so of course it's heralded as the second coming. In reality there are at least 3 Tom Waits albums that I like better. Although not sure Tom Waits comparisons are fair to either party. _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart
I listened to Bolt Cutters a second time over the weekend and it left me pretty cold that time. I wanted to focus more on the lyrics but the off kilter rhythms made it hard for me to focus. I think that's just a personal thing - to use the Tom Waits comparison I've always been a bigger fan of his ballads and in general this style is difficult for me. As for whether you or I am missing anything - I was talking to a friend about the album and they mentioned that the summary for the Pitchfork review says "nothing has ever sounded like this." We both really disagreed with that and I think Pitchfork knows that's an exaggeration too. My thought is that the hype is coming from the fact that Apple was already a canonized music legend, and the fact that the new album is as good or better than her best work is pretty unexpected and incredible. TPAB kind of had the same thing going for it when it was released, as it followed up an undisputed classic with an album that was somehow even better. And I think that kind of hype is justified, it's exciting for fans of the artist. I'm not a big fan though so i'm going to sit this one out from here, but it's cool for music that the album is that well liked I guess. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. And it's harder as anything else.
