I've never quite grasped the greatness of Astral Weeks

Listened again. Turns out it's 100% great (shock news to you all I know). I don't even mind that I had to shell put for the album a second time.

It's funny how you can feel completely differently about an album after not listening for a while. I think it's because I listen to more Jazz now that I was able to appreciate Astral Weeks better. Though I'm still a bit confused abut why I didn't love it in the first place.

Both Astral Weeks and Moondance are near perfect albums imo. Pretty crazy those were back to back.

I'd have to agree with Skinny's comments though. After Veedon Fleece he pretty much washed up (imo). He didn't age as well as say a Randy Newman or Johnny Cash or Paul Simon... all of which who have had albums late in their career people cared about. Having said that, to be fair, I haven't listened to much after it because it was a rough go and I don't consider myself a masochist. It was just painfully boring... I remember an older track showing up on a comp or like listening to a comp of his and near the end I had to turn it off it was so stale.

Tip to some of the earlier works, also mentioned, with Them or Brown Eyed Girl... I mean damn, is there really a better pop song than Brown Eyed Girl?

I love Veedon Fleece. He had a divorce shortly after that, suffered writers block and stage fright. There was a three year gap (unusual for him) before Period of Transition, and Into the Music rounding out the 70โ€™s (Thereโ€™s a few things on those I like). In the 80โ€™s I totally rate Common One, and Beautiful Vision is another virtually perfect album. Iโ€™ve found things to like on most albums. In the 90โ€™s Hymns to the Silence is a cracker in my opinion, and suffers the fate of many double albums, in that with a bit of a cull, they make an even better single album.

I thought Avalon Sunset was a great album, and it's seen as the worst of the 80's catalogue, or so I've read. It's not worth top 500 like Van Morrison's best albums, and not even top 5 for Morrison, but it deserves more recognition.
