This is only going to count as my entry for Iceland. Got around to watching the film the other day and thought it was beautiful. One of the most promising debuts in recent memory. Absolute shame. Score's gorgeous, slightly dreamier than Johann usually went, but it still somehow sounds like a warm hug in the middle of winter.

Def not a pointless comment, every contribution's welcome. Glad to hear your enjoying the choices, and I'm hoping you can find a few new ones down the line. There's legit been some great finds throughout this, and at least a few 9/10s. I'll admit, I might have to comb through my first round to remember some of the picks, but I try not to post records I don't like (unless I'm desperate to find something from that country... *cough* Qatar...*cough*). I have to figure out something from North Korea soon, and I haven't a clue what. Might not be great :lol:.
I do think this project is something I'd recommend people taking on. Maybe skip some of the lesser islands and whatnot, but with the internet age it isn't overly difficult to find something from every country, and it doesn't have to be like... y'know... 'library music'. At the end of the day it isn't too many albums, and the outlook you gain is great. The expansion of music this last decade in particular has really changed the 'sound' you might expect from some parts of the world. The innovation coming out of east Africa and Latin America has me looking forward to what's going to come out of there in the next few years. Digging though 80s tapes from Indonesia has been wild. They were doing stuff back then that sounds like Bjork/Arca, etc now, and some things that sounds like nothing else at all.
Glad you like the Ireland picks ๐ (apologies for the "reference to Ireland as part of the British Isles way back"... I don't particularly remember it, but I have learned since 8-[). Definitely wanted to swing more towards heritage Ireland than say Aphex Twin or MBV. I'm finding there's this unique haunting warmth to a lot of the Gaelic folk music, and I'm not sure I've heard that sound mimicked elsewhere in the world. Always worth digging through.
Great insights, I've often contemplated attempting this and may just eventually (and I like to think I've heard a decent chunk of music from beyond the 'western world' thus far...), but still, plenty more out there, admittedly a daunting task so fair play for attempting this again, I'll be following closely!
Ha, don't worry about it, just messing! Yeah, it's always nice to see the likes of Mary O'Hara et al. get some love around these parts, grew up around Irish trad music so it's always a pleasant surprise when it pops up around here, naturally a bit outside the realm of a lot of people here understandably, not even sure I'd personally count Aphex Twin as Irish personally (I know plenty who'll disagree on that matter no doubt), but it's great to see the route you've taken, eagerly awaiting more! _________________

Longlost and dug up last year, I can't quite pinpoint when this came out. Estimated 80s, but that's about as close as we get. Recorded in Amsterdam after winning some sort of contest? And... and I think only ever released in Russia? Funky synthy stuff. Pretty good. Story's weird.
I swear half the tapes I listen to from Cambodia sound like compilations from 7-10 different bands on one record but it's actually just two people doing different things every single song. This is one of those tapes.
I like ล irom. They've been making some solid music for some years now. Very ethereal yet rugged, heartfelt, there's always this wall of sound that manages to still somehow be very loose. Aight, so, the lyrics are propaganda, but that's how you know it's authentic. The arrangements here are... well, they're pretty good. Fascinating to hear music from people who most likely have very little influence to go on. The vocals for each song seem to kick off somewhere around the halfway mark of each track, and the harmonies usually shoot to sometimes operatic heights. Production's solid, performances are solid, instrumentation is goodโ it's just... otherworldly. You can dance to it, but you might be confused as to why.
This is a pretty unique sound. Somewhere between folk and traditional Maori. Cover looks like it's for a bootleg tape of some 80s summer olympics, but it's definitely music, I promise. (It's pretty good too).
Bizarre one here. It's somewhat normal bedroom-pop but with a jarring vocal delivery. Can't quite make up my mind if it's bad or brilliant. Constantly keeps your attention, but there's some bits that might be questionable. Going to keep my eye on what she does next, but this is certainly... different.

AAAYYY. This is nice. Solid hip-hop EP. Slick production, smidge high-end heavy, but pretty chill nonetheless, and the vocal delivery is tight. Digging it. Airy, dreamy, lax, little jazzy, little funky, some solid barsโ dude's alright. Nice features too.
Abul Mogard, former metal factory worker who misses the clunk, has been releasing a pretty steady stream of ambient music since his retirement. Kinda smokey, dust floating about, the clouds come to you on the ground rather than sending you towards the sky to greet them. I feel like I should have mentioned And We Are Passing Through Silently is borderline a vaporwave album... in style anyway. An ambient remix album? Something like that. It isn't actually original works, he just put his style on a few tracks from others. Both of the above are original works ^. He understands what the works need to be, and it shows.
