Too Many People In One Bed by Sandra Phillips

A great soul record written by the one and only Swamp Dogg. He's the man, and I'm glad that he's had a bit of a renaissance over the last several years. This wouldn't fly nowadays, but he really had a knack for writing from the perspective of a scorned woman. He wrote for Doris Duke on "I'm a Loser" and most of the songs follow the same kind of feeling on here. Both excellent albums, and I'd give a recommend for those that like soul from this time period.

Ledzep, usually, I would pick the album that I've heard, but let's listen to Demilich.

Patty Pravo- Concerto Per Patty
Ama Divers- Shadow Seeking Sun
Steve Roden - Crop Circles
Skepticism- Stormcrowfleet
Crash Worship - This
Brigitte Fontaine & Areski - L'incendie
gangpol & mit - the hopelessly sad story of the hideous end of the world
Rippikoulu - Musta Seremonia
Damião Experiença ‎– Planeta Lamma
Paket aranžman - Šarlo Akrobata

Nespithe by Demilich
Dank af. Brutal death metal, but with complex rhythms, a lot of technical, progressive and even experimental tendencies. I like to complain, but there's nothing I can complain about here. It sounds a bit samey, but that's not really a problem since I love the sound. And it seems Demilich were highly influential on bands like Blood Incantation, not only with their playing and song structures, but with song names as well. "Putrefying Road In The Ninteenth Extremity (...Somewhere Inside The Bowl...)", or even better, "The Planet That Once Used to Absorb Flesh in Order to Achieve Divinity and Immortality (Suffocated to the Flesh That It Desired...)". Both hilarious and cool. If you can take "burping" bdm vocals, this is for you. The best Finnish death metal album I've heard that's not from a band called Amorphis. 9/10

I'll pass Paket Aranžman for now, let's continue with Finnish death metal. Never thought I'd see Rippikoulu in this game, but Musta Seremonia is a classic death/doom demo. Not my favourite but well worth hearing.

If you can take "burping" bdm vocals

Haha, the vocals are absolutely perplexing. I don't know why anybody thought that added anything to the music which I thought sounded like a more metal version of Don Caballero. There really are some times (there's a big one in the second track) that it really does just sound like somone burping. It's too funny to take seriously.

Musta Seremonia by Rippikoulu

This was pretty good Doomy death metal stuff that was over quickly in just 32 minutes. Vocals on this were more typical than Zep's choice, that's for sure. Not anything that I noted being special about it though. Demilich was better.

Zep, Darkspace III is excellent.

The Argument by Fugazi

My second Fugazi album, and I like it significantly more than Repeater. The pure energy of their debut is nice, but The Argument's subtler sound palette is paired with more fully-realized compositions. I'm sure my stylistic biases play a role in my preference, but the consistency here is also impressive - very good songs from start to finish. 3.5/5.

Starsailor by Tim Buckley

I was listening to some Chris Cornell live acoustic performances just before this, and as fantastic a singer as he is, Tim Buckley is even more impressive here. His vocals on this album blew me away. I love the experimentation of 1969 and 1970, and the avant-garde experimentation (a bit jazzy at times - but never too much, a bit bluesy at times) here is fascinating while at the same time allowing Tim Buckley's vocals to be on full display and the star of the show. I have loved This Mortal Coil's version of Song To The Siren for a long time but I've never heard the original before. Shame on me because it's even better. An amazing song and sure to be a new favourite of mine. I also loved when he seemed to just let himself go on Monterey. Jungle Fire was incredible, and the whole second half of the album was great from Song To The Siren to the closer. Why is this album not in the top 100 of the decade? A strong 8.5/10, 4/23 for 1970, and 26/100 for the decade.

A couple of great albums here Baystate, and a few more I've wanted to hear for a long time, but I'm not sure you would like my favourites from these choices, so give The Wedding Present a go instead.

Concerto Per Patty by Patty Pravo

Starting off a pop album with a 12 minute orchestral suite is a bold move, but Ms. Pravo and company pull it off. It's a great piece with some other good songs (and a Beatles cover) but the highlight for me is undoubtedly this track. It sounds like something that RJD2 or another hip hop producer would've have made in the 00s. I'm sure it's been sampled more than a couple of times.

George Best by The Wedding Present

Very high-energy, relentless jangle pop. Fantastic guitars and very good vocals. The songs are quite nice, but I don't know if I'd call the songwriting strong. The emotional range is fairly typical for the era and style. It would be nice if this had more diversity in sound/tempo or more great tracks, but it's still well worth a listen as it is. Perfect for if you want a concentrated blast of jangling. 3.5/5.

You know when that first techno track transitions to an Irish-like folksong that you're in for a wild ride. Genre transitions on pretty much every track, but with a consistent techno backdrop. Thank you Yamantaka Eye. Very Cool!

Baystate, really hard to pick one, but I want more people to listen to Pile (they're actually from your state) so give their last album a shot.

A Hairshirt Of Purpose by Pile

Really good record. Skillful musicianship that produces an appealing indie rock / post-hardcore stew. For some reason I have a lot of trouble differentiating quality in this general genre niche. Every album I hear I enjoy, but I'd be hard-pressed to pick one as better than another and explain why. Perhaps I simply don't have enough listening experience, I don't know. I'm four records into Unwound's discography and can't make any distinctions in how much I like them. Anyway, the songwriting and vocals in A Hairshirt Of Purpose are solid throughout, but the highlights are all instrumental. 3.5/5.

To be honest, I actually kind of liked them? I mean they're hilarious, but that doesn't bother me. Brutal DM stuff has to tick 3 boxes for me: energetic, fun, interesting. This one is all of that and more. It's fun as hell, it's very complex/progressive (unusually so for 1993), the songwriting is top notch, and the energy is through the roof. I understand it if you (or anybody else for that matter) dislike the vocals though.

Dark Space III by Darkspace
This is pretty damn intense. Even in its dark ambient moments, it's unsettling. Probably the best of the 3 Tobias Möckl albums I've heard so far (the other two are Paysage d'Hiver), but only just. It could've been a bit shorter, but I know Tobias loves to make long lofi pieces of music. The songs are as uniform as their names are, but they all fit rather well together. Like one very long ambient black metal jam. 8/10

A lot of cool stuff there, but listen to Nick Cave and the gang in their craziest days. Junkyard it is.
