Green Line by Steve Marcus, Miroslav Vitous, Sonny Sharrock, Daniel Humair

Just listen to it. That's my review. I'll say that this is a rare jazz album that balances approachability with improvisation that is extremely attractive to me. Excellent musicianship; just a joy to listen to, really. That first track flies out of the speakers.

Ledzep, Akron/Family is something I haven't listened to in a long time. My brother used to like them.

American Beauty by Grateful Dead

This is my first exposure to Grateful Dead that I know of, apart from one tribute album, and it's not quite what I expected. A nice enough sound but seems very of it's times, and I struggle to get much enjoyment out of the country rock/ folk rock / harmonising of that era. 6.5/10 and 22/24 for 1970.

Damião Experiença ‎– Planeta Lamma sounds like it would be an experience.

Akron/Family by Akron/Family
This was some pretty cool psych/avant folk and Americana, with great atmosphere and decent songwriting. I wanted it to be even weirder and more unpredictable though. Also, the vocals can be a selling point on these types or records, but the guy's singing here would fit better with a classic indie folk sound. It's one hour long, but doesn't really lose any momentum throughout, which is nice. Some individual songs may be too long though. Quite nice overall, and it might be a grower. 7.5/10

Planeta Lamma by Damião Experiença

Didn't know that Brazil had an answer to Wesley Willis, but here we are. Ok, that's not a one to one comparison at all, but this is definitely one of those outsider artist kind of albums. It's not without it's charms, and I think that some of his rantings are musically interesting, but not enough for a full 40 minute album.

Ledzep, listen to the new Lightning Bolt

Sonic Citadel by Lightning Bolt
Headache inducing bangers. Sometimes even Big Banger(s). Love the song names, Hüsker Dön't, Don Henley in the Park and Van Halen 2049 were my favourites. Nothing very different from Wonderful Rainbow, except it's even louder I think. Maybe a bit too long for noise rock album at 52 minutes, it's hard enough to get through 42 minutes of their sophomore. But I liked it a lot, goes straight to 2019 chart. 8/10

Paket Aranžman. I'm not sure if you'll like it without understanding the lyrics, but try it.

Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes

This is sort of pretty at times, but there's just too many indie tropes that agitate me -- that ugly millennial whoop, the over-the-top reverb, and the over-calculated vocal mannerisms (though I don't find this guy's vocals as outrageous or overworked as a lot of other indie singers). Mostly, though, it's the guitar work that bothers me. It's too dopey to be interesting. Lots of simple 4/4 strumming and endlessly arpeggiated chords. I'm actually watching them play live on youtube now, and my opinion of them is just sinking further. I feel like they're wasting my time with that ultra-safe, bland playing style, because they're either pandering, being disingenuous, or they're gutless. Maybe all three.

It does have some okay moments. But, mostly it just strikes me as the shadow of something more beautiful. One dimension is missing.

Sorry, Zep.

It's fantastic. I love Hopelessness Blues artwork a lot too.

🤣 They do use a lot of indie folk tropes, but I think they make a rather unique experience with them. Though i can see why someone would dislike it. I find Helplessness Blues a great listen around the Christmas holidays, for no particular reason, it just fits the winter time.

The album indeed rocks. Let's just pretend that was the message. It sounds like a more old school death metal oriented Ulcerate, there's some dissonance and avant-garde metal elements, but it's definitely not "avant-garde metal". "OSDM with a twist" is a better description. The lyrics match the album cover, so I've stopped following them after the first song. But sonically, this is an extremely captivating album, and the songwriting is solid throughout. 42 minutes is exactly the right runtime, I felt exhausted but satisfied after that monster of an 8 and half minute title track closer ended. That song was the highlight, but really it's all fantastic. And I'm 99% sure it's a grower, there's layers to the songwriting here. 8 or 8.5/10

Oof, hmm. Try Blonde maybe. It's not one of my favourites of the decade, but it's good. If you hate it we can just shit on Pitchfork together 😁

Junkyard by The Birthday Party

The cover is pretty appropriate here, as this is a raucous, ramshackle blast of noisy post-punk. Sonically, it reminds me a bit of some of the later bands I've heard in this game like Big Black and The Jesus Lizard. And like those artists, The Birthday Party mix in their share of disgusting lyrics (in this case, misogynistic gore). I really enjoy the sound, but the lyrics on several songs make it a mediocre listen. High 3.5 becomes 2.5/5.

Soultrane by John Coltrane
This is (checks)... tenth Coltrane album I've heard (although two of them are Duke/Coltrane and Monk Quartet/Coltrane). Still haven't heard Ballads and Ole Coltrane, those two are ranked higher on BEA. It's easily one of his best early "sheets of sound" albums imo. Incredible playing by all of the band members as expected, and even though none of the 5 songs are originals, I found them to be almost on par with the compositions on the much more acclaimed Blue Train. Instead of the frantic pace and energetic playing, a good portion of Soultrane is laid back, although the playing is still highly sophisticated and dexterous. Coltrane, surprisingly, plays a support role on the second tune, I Want To Talk About You (that's Billy Eckstine's song). Other tunes (namely You Say You Care and Russian Lullaby) are driven by Coltrane's tenor sax wizardry, and overall it's a very likeable collection of songs. 8.5/10

Aight, go with Ritual De Lo Habitual. It's been ages since I've heard it, but it's a blast.
