I'm always happy to listen to punk from places other than the US and UK, and this comp seemed like it's important for the Balkan region. I thought the tunes were decent and the mood appropriately aggressive. I can only assume that it's probably a politically charged album regarding whatever was going on in the former Yugoslavia at the time. Can you shed any light on that Ledzep?
Regarding the music situation in the Yugoslavia, this is a good TLDR. The history of Yugoslavia is a complex and often controversial subject, I rather wouldn't discuss it here. Regarding the lyrics, most of them are political, but not all.
---------------
"Ona se budi" ("She awakes") is a coming-of-age song (the first line is "She turns 18 in June"), but it does have a political (or rather feminist) verse, very rough translation:
Celoga života nečim joj pune glavu
Lutkice, krpice, suknjice su stvari za devojčice
Igrati lastiš on nikad nije znala
Skuvati ručak nikad nije bila njena stvar
All her life they're filling her head
Dolls, cloths, skirts are girl things
She never knew how to play elastic*
Cooking a lunch was never her thing
*("lastiš" is a Serbian name for that rubber band jumping game that a lot of girls play, don't know if there's an official English name for it)
---------------
By far the most famous and controversial song here is "Maljčiki". Translation is something like "Small ones", it's a word which describes a group of people who are small, either by stature or, in this case, small like cogs in a machine. Something like "younglings" but it describes a group of small rather than young people. The song's about Soviet workers lifestyle, presumably metallurgical factory workers. Its dripping sarcasm would be hilarious if it wasn't how socialism actually portrayed a worker's life :D. The whole album is a full blown classic, but especially this song. Again, a rough but decent translation:
Plamene zore bude me iz sna
Fabrička jutra, dim iz dimnjaka
Pesma se ori, mladi radnici
Čelična jutra, hitam fabrici
Drugovi moji, radni, veseli
Bicikle voze, ponositi svi
Drugovi moji, radni, veseli
Pobede nove nosićemo mi
Sunce već greje, vetar ćarlija
Jutarnja rosa, zemlja mirisna
Sunce već greje, a a a a a
Bogata žetva, radujem se ja
Пополудний кржок, на которой я иду
Там уже будет моя девушка, девушка блондинка
Которую я люблю
Мы вместе будем ездить на кораблю
Visoke peći potpaljujem ja
Ruda se topi, nasmejan sam ja
Pesma se ori, peva fabrika
Pesma se ori, a a a a a
Flaming dawns are waking me from dream
Factory mornings, smoke from chimneys
The song is sung, young workers
Steel mornings, I rush to factory
My friends, diligent, happy
Riding the bikes, all proud
My friends, diligent, happy
We'll all hail new victories
The sun's already warm, the wind is puffing
The ore melts, I'm smiling
The song is sung, the factory's singing
The song is sung, a a a a a
(The afternoon hitch on which I go
There will already be my girl, blonde girl
Which i love
We will ride the ship together)*
I'm lighting the blast furnaces
The ore melts, I'm smiling
The song is sung, the factory's singing
The song is sung, a a a a a
*This part is in Russian, this is straight from Google Translate so it sucks
---------------
Another not very subtle song is "Mali čovek" ("A small man"):
Mali čovek želi preko crte
Preko crte želi ali ne sme
Njega guše propisane norme
Preko crte njegovo je mesto
A small man wants to cross the line
Wants to cross the line but he can't
He's suffocated by prescribed norms
His place is on the other side of the line
---------------
Then there's Plastika ("Plastic"), both a social commentary and an ecological song:
Ja
Ja nosim plasticno odelo
I plastika je moja hrana
Mozda sam plastican i ja
I
I wear a plastic suit
Plastic is my food
Maybe I'm plastic too
---------------
Zlatni papagaj ("Golden parrot") is a song about snobs, this is the chorus:
Zlatni papagaj
Tata plaća sve račune
Zlatni papagaj
Jer mi smo snobovi
Golden parrot
Daddy's paying all the bills
Golden parrot
'Cause we're snobs
---------------
Niko kao ja ("No one like me") is a simple one, but possibly the second most famous. It's also fairly ironic, a song about egoism.
Niko, niko kao ja...
Nikad niko kao ja
I niko
I nikad
I niko
Ja!
No one, no one like me...
Never no one like me
And no one
And never
And no one
Me!
etc.
Sorry for the long post, when I find some free time I'll try to break down my favourite or/and the most important Yugoslavian songs in my diary, that 80s scene (and 70s and 90s to an extent) was a gold mine 😄 _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart
As soon as I heard the first 30 seconds I was sold. If this is a good representation of tribal ambient, consider me a fan of the genre. Mystic, dark, atmospheric and tribal.
Exactly what it says in the name. Yamashirogumi did the Akira soundtrack too, I absolutely loved the music in that one but never bothered to listen to the full score. Gotta give it a go. 8.5/10

Another lady working on the avant-garde side of things, but this time within the folk idiom. I haven't heard much else from her, but I know that her album with The Art Ensemble of Chicago is a critically lauded one. Just like the previous artist, this album had enough great moments to warrant further listening and exploration. My reviews haven't been great lately. :/

Allright, i am not gonna make many friends with this. Obviously i had listened to The Cure before, but it never seemed to stick with me. Did this new listen changed that ? Well, no. I realize that this group has been so influential on so many other, but maybe that's precisely why now it register as kind of a very generic 80's new wave goth stuff. The upfront bass lines, the longing synth, the simple throbbing rythm, it all feel pretty dated to me. In fact, i realized in the middle of my listen that i had in fact allready listened to the album, but it seems to kind of slide on me. The very 80's production, in particular drowns everything in a ton of reverb, which i guess is supposed to contribute to the atmospheric arena rock style, but for me it kind of make everything feels the same. I couldn't distinguish one song from an another because they are so alike.
I get what the band is supposed to do, but it doesn't do it for me. It's not bad by any mean, but if i am listening to goth rock, i'd rather listen to Clan of Xymox.

Psychedelic Jungle by The Cramps
Not every song here is great and the production is less dirty, noisy and lofi than their other stuff. But I just love the idea behind The Cramps. Psychobilly is one of the greatest inventions in the history of mankind, let's be honest. Their charismatic, left-field and simplistic approach to songwriting is as inventive as it's fun. Goo Goo Muck is possibly my favourite Cramps cover, the original by Ronnie Cook and the Gaylads is a quirky novelty song with obvious sexual connotations, but this cover is just on another level. They make it so much weirder, Lux Interior's vocals are both creepy and hilarious and the instumental is gritty, noisy and much more fitting. It turns the song from a simple joke tune to one of the coolest punk songs of the 80s imo.
"When the sun goes down, and the moon comes up
I turn into a teenage goo goo muck
Yeah, I cruise through the city and I roam the street
Looking for something that is nice to eat
You better duck
When I show up
The goo goo muck
I'm the night headhunter looking for some head
With a way out body underneath that head
Well I'll get you baby with a little luck
'Cause I'm teenage tiger and a goo goo muck
You better duck
When I show up
The goo goo muck"
Other great cuts include Voodoo Doll, Cavemen, Jungle Hop, Under The Wires and a fantastic Beautiful Gardens. My favourite by The Cramps is still Bad Music For Bad People which is severely underrated (probably because it's a revenge cash-in compilation by the former label). Everybody should give The Cramps a go. 7.5/10

Gotta tell ya, this one is hard to categorize. And, it also has one of my favorite musicians in it, Rick Froberg, from Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, etc. "This" is absolutely nothing like anything he's ever been involved with though. It's categorized mostly as tribal ambient, and it is, to an extent, but there's kind of just a lot noodling going on as well for about the first 20 minutes. Things open up a bit after the 20 minute mark when a chunky bass kind of comes in out of nowhere and adds some much needed texture to tribal beats. Definitely a strange one.
Mark Hollis is my favorite of those Ledzep.

Contrary to the Cure, i allready loved Neil Young, having listened to Harvest pretty much all my life (i think one of the very first thing i learned when i picked a guiter was The Needle and the Damage Done). So i was pleased to hear Neil Youg in a similar vein. This is certainly more electric than Harvest, and Neil Young flexes his guitar soloing a few times. A very enjoyable listen, i played it while moving some logs and it was perfect 😁 .
Not much to say about it, i would call it Harvest 2, but since it actually came out before, i will now refer to Harvest as After the Gold Rush 2 : Acoustic Boogaloo.
2. Sad to hear that you didn't like This is Happening, Jameth. Let's see what you think about Modern Vampires of the City, since i just listened to it.

Welcome to the game Fast-and-Bulbous, and thanks for the great selection. I went through a The Doors phase when I was a teenager, with their self titled, L.A. Woman, and their greatest hits being the albums I had. I played them all a lot, and I probably credit The Doors with the love of psychedelic blues rock that I now have. I always enjoy revisiting them over the years, and it's great to get around to this great album. The first half of this album is so strong, with Roadhouse Blues being right up there as one of my favourite The Doors songs ever, and Peace Frog is fantastic. The middle of the album is a solid batch of songs without being great, then the album picks up again with some good songs to finish. I enjoyed the bit of variety throughout the album too, with a bit of funk, old style rock n roll, a crooning ballad, and even a sea shanty. I give it an 8.5/10, and put it in my top 10 for 1970 at 10/27 (1970 really is a great year for me...my top 10 here might be one of my favourite yearly top 10s), and 49/100 for the decade.
Let's go with my favourite The Flaming Lips album, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

Great album that molds morose angst into well-written songs. I love indie pop, and this album makes excellent use of the form. Not every song is a winner, but most of them are. I think I like this slightly better than Electro-Shock Blues. My biggest complaint is that the cover is unsettling, especially given that the title track is a romantic tune. 4/5.
