Ma Ta Ta Bi by Akio Suzuki & Aki Onda

Credits

Akio Suzuki
echo, glass harmonica, objects, bells

Aki Onda
radios, electronics, amplification, tape echo, cymbals, bottles, editing, mixing

I like that two of the "instruments that Akio Suzuki plays on this album are "Echo" & "objects". ๐Ÿ˜

The credits should be able to tell you all you need to know about this. It's Free Improvisation + Musique Concrete, so you know what you're getting into.

Hope you don't have much going on this weekend Jameth, because Kesto is exactly as long as it's title states.

What would be the point of listening to music with no comparative basis?

Toxicity by System Of A Down

I don't know why this review was so anticipated haha, did you all think I'd hate this? On the contrary, I really enjoy it. The heaviness and energy throughout is great. I don't have any problems with the lyrics, with the exception of Prison Song. While I agree with the message, I found the presentation to be humorously didactic. Overall though, the socially conscious lyrics are a positive. The vocal tone is probably the weakest element in the album, as it sometimes sounds a bit whiny, but the vocals are definitely superior to a large percentage of their metal peers. And the songwriting is quite solid. My favorite track is Aerials, including the hidden track with the Armenian folk breakdown. A unique and fun album, and a welcome change of pace for my listening habits. 3.5/5.

Rass Claat Dub by Various Artists

If you like dub music, then I imagine that you will find a lot to like about this comp from 1976.

That's why I wasn't sure if it would stick or not, but I'm glad it did. I relistened to it yesterday and I'm finding myself to be more confused by it's popularity than ever, but I also first listened to it when I was in elementary school, so I've got a weird history with the album.

Struttin' by The Meters

Some funky New Orleans R&B. My first exposure to The Meters. Comprised mostly of instrumentals with some vocals here and there (including a cover of Wichita Lineman, which is probably a bit lack-lustre IMO), but it's the groovy instrumentals I dug more than songs with the R&B/soul type vocals. The opening song Chicken Strut was an unexpected surprise, being a bit novel to my ears, and the highlight of the album. 7.5/10, and 25/30 for 1970.

Let's try gangpol & mit - the hopelessly sad story of the hideous end of the world next.

The Hopelessly Sad Story Of The Hideous End Of The World by Gangpol & Mit

I enjoyed this video game inspired album of upbeat and unique electronic music. A great listen that I'll return to when I'm in the mood for an upbeat electronic album.

Oh shit, what do I pick... Come To My Garden is cool.

Kesto (234.48:4) by Pan Sonic

At four hours, this is quite the undertaking to listen to, but there's a wild amount of variation to keep it from falling into monotony. The first disc features mostly EDM/IDM type sketches with some passages of harsh noise. It's enjoyable material, but I guess I'm a little more keen on the next two discs. Lots of reductionism pieces that work with negative space, and an approach to music that I haven't encountered before. It's an interesting approach and I'll have to check out more stuff that uses it, which seems to mostly be classical. The opener of the third disc, "Sewageworld", is not a good track. There's too much silence, which is mostly broken up by only the sound of a flushing toilet. Yikes. Then there's the 61 minute ambient drone that occupies the final disc. It's long, but I think a good drone should work either as a long player or truncated by the listener (you can always slowly drop the volume to zero). On the whole, it's a lot to take in with a bewildering amount of genres on exhibit, and perhaps it's overreaching in that respect. But, I'm gonna view it as more of a musical sketchbook than an album, and it works well as that.

As much as I liked this, it was a little short on noise for something selected from a noise chart. Maybe I should have excluded sub-genre listings, but oh well.

Here Come The Warm Jets by Brian Eno
I've been on Eno binge the last few days, inspired by this pick. What a great, revolutionary artist he was. I like to divide his discography into ambient and non-ambient groups, and I have favourites from each. This is definitely his least ambient solo album I've heard, but it's still damn good. The opening song, Needles in the Camel's Eye, is the best rock song that Eno has ever written, hands down. Phil Manzanera, his teammate from Roxy Music, has some killer riffs and solos, most notably on Baby's on Fire, which is a truly magnificent guitar solo worthy of being mentioned alongside all the Gilmour, Page, Hendrix etc. classics. On Some Faraway Beach is another standout song with its transcending piano melodies and backing vocals, as well as a huge chorus. Some of Them Are Old is incredible too, with probably the best arrangement on the whole album and several well written sections. It's not my favourite non-ambient Eno, I prefer Before And After Science as well as Another Green World, but it's got several classics and I'm glad I've finally heard it. 8.5/10

The Inalienable Dreamless by Discordance Axis

This probably ranks just below Cattle Decapitation as most ear-shatteringly aggressive things I've listened to. The album is 28 minutes of non-stop screaming, grinding riffs, and drum sadism. I love albums that have covers that are exactly the opposite of the contents, the title and band name even sounding like it could be some kind of ambient kind of project. This one might be the most ironic of all. One unique thing about this album was the mixing of the high-pitched screeching kind of metal vocals with the lower-pitched growling sort. When they were juxtaposed, it created a different kind of sound than I'd heard before.

Autopsy has been on there for quite some time.
