Shit. I admit I might have missed a few other good songs from their catalog : )

They're too loud! Their sound is thick and dense. It's like a steamroller, I find it fatiguing.

I mean... that's the 80s 'gaze and noise pop influences in their dissonant, grungy sound. That's kind of the point to have this beautiful melodies inbetween thick fuzz and loud dynamics...

Most Smashing Pumpkins fans love those beautiful melodies in between thick fuzz and loud sound dynamics, and would consider 1979 kind of boring by their standards (not to say it's a bad song). But okay, Yann's opinion is Yann's opinion. However, I can't help but find it strange that Yann would have this opinion while simultaneously having a My Bloody Valentine album in his Top 10.

Gotta say I love most abrasive shoegaze/alt rock/dream pop and compared to most of their peers I find Smashing Pumpkins quite boring and bloated. Back half of Siamese Dream though is undeniable.

My Bloody Valentine is different, it's a (loud) landscape (and shoegaze in general really created a unique style). No, Smashing Pumpkins, there is something about the way it's engineered that is too loud and lacking dynamics (thick fuzz as you put it). The singer usually starts singing rather quietly and then the big grunge sound barge in (and then he starts singing with a sort of nasal howl).
Like Green Day, I feel their sound is very compressed, and lacking contrast (even if the structure is at times high and low). I prefer how The Pixies sound.
