1. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West

It's been a while since i've been on here, but that is because i wanted to do a big piece reviewing this album in relation to Kanye's personnality and i did, but then i missclicked and lost all of it #-o. Also i started a big project reviewing the entire Autechre's discography (self-promotion ๐Ÿ˜ ).
I don't have the strength to redo it (i might one day), so let's say that i liked the album. It feels very sincere and personnal, and even thought there are some tracks that were forgettable and Kanye's singing isn't great, Runaway is awesome. Lyrics-wise it ranges from pretty clever to pretty dumb. The production is very forward-thinking as usual with Kanye and it feels like it was very carefully and lovingly crafted.

2. I love some Lou Reed, let's go for Rock N' Roll Animal.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. I want to continue posting on this thread, but i'm a little busy with my music diary, so i figured i could do some EPs, since i never listen to them (except well... Autechre's EP's), and it's a big part of music that i miss. I found a chart on RYM that seems nice.

RYM Top EPs of All Time :

2. Uneven Compromise - Lil Ugly Mane
3. You Made Me Realise - My Bloody Valentine
4. Jar of Flies - Alice in Chains
7. Solace - Earl Sweatshirt
9. Kindred EP - Burial
11. In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country - Boards of Canada
16. Violator - Depeche Mode (didn't got picked on the overall chart, let's see if it has some more luck on here :D)
17. Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush
19. Beware - The Misfits
20. Shutout EP - The Walker Brothers

Wilderness by Wilderness
I'm not sold on the guy's vocals. In fact I really don't like them after a few songs. They sounded unique and interesting in the beginning, but in the end it's just irritating, and without any variety either. He's constantly wailing ๐Ÿคฃ It's a decent post punky indie album otherwise, sometimes with post hardcore thrown in for good measure. Not many highlights honestly, and the last song, Mirrored Palm, was a major departure from the sound with its interesting piano work and exquisite melodies. Not bad by any means, but I'm not too thrilled either. 7/10

Good list, AIC, Earl and MBV are tough to pass, but recently I've been jamming to Burial's newer work a lot. Go with Kindred.

Slow Crimes by The Work

With members of Henry Cow and Aksak Maboul involved, I knew exactly what I was getting into with this one. It's on the worse side of those two bands, as in, an experimental album that wastes more time trying to be experimental than actually creating decent music. It's not bad though, and there are a few moments when they pull together a track that's up to par with their other projects; however, I'd rather just stick to the other band's albums.

Yeah, that seems to be the main gripe with the album for a lot of people. I don't mind the shouted vocals. ๐Ÿ˜œ

Let's go with Don Cab 2.

Rock N Roll Animal by Lou Reed

Well sweet, this was the other album I was hoping for. If you'd like to hear Lou Reed apply the heavier side of his glammy Transformer sound to some Velvets classics in a live setting, this album is for you. It's definitely a fun record, but personally I don't think the songs and style make for a particularly good combo. Sweet Jane and White Light / White Heat are great, but it feels like much of the original power of this setlist has been drained. This goes for Heroin especially. The one non-Velvets track is Lady Day, which sounds good, but that's not one of my favorite songs/albums of his. For what it's worth, the majority of Reed's backing band here is from Alice Cooper. In any case, this performance doesn't feel essential to me, but it's an interesting listen, especially for fans of Transformer. 3.5/5.

2. Take it from the top, Chief.

3. Shifting gears now. I want to fill in some gaps in my hip-hop listening. So I've made a list with RYM's top three hip-hop albums (medalists if you will) for each year, and I'm going to try out those I haven't heard. Each year will be represented no more than once in any given set of ten choices.

1981 gold: Live Convention 81 - Various Artists
1982 silver: Live Convention 82 - Various Artists
1983 silver: Whodini - Whodini

Meditations On The Self And The Other by Precipitation

Nice ambient album.

If you've ever wanted to listen to the Tao Te Ching while there's an improvised bit of electronic stuff going on, then I guess this is the album for you. That only concerns the A side of this album, but it goes on for 30 minutes. The track does not move forward very much during that time and the sound pallette remains generally the same from start to finish. 15 minutes of it was fine, but 30 was too much. The next two tracks add some drums, and the final track is more of the same from the first. The sounds on here are great, texturally, and I enjoy what this album has to offer, but I'd enjoy it more in about a 45 minute package instead of an hour long one.

Baystate, I've heard all of those (except for those Live Convention albums, I'll have to give those a listen), and I would go with the first, Kurtis Blow. It's cheesy, but I love the funk instrumentals.

Get Happy!! by Elvis Costello And The Attractions

As an album lover I think Elvis Costello is one of those rare exceptions to the rule where I love his singles (I Want You is a 10/10 song for me) but have never had the urge to listen to any of his studio albums. I may have heard a couple a long time ago, but I don't really recall them if I did. Although the compilation album from 1985, The Man, got heaps of plays from me when I had it back in the day. Listening to Get Happy!! hasn't changed my view. It's an easy, breezy listen, that despite having 20 songs, just flies by pleasantly, but without anything outstanding or instantly catchy enough for me to want to return to. Sadly, the best song on the album, I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down, is a cover, but it is a great song. I do love his voice but I think he uses it better later on in his career (the aforementioned I Want You, I Wanna Be Loved, and So Like Candy to list a few examples). So a decent enough album, but for 1980ish music from the UK inspired by US soul and Motown from the past I would much rather listen to The Jam. Sound Affects is a much better album and in my opinion should be higher for 1980 than Get Happy!! (Sound Affects is currently at #18 and Get Happy!! at #15 on BEA). 7/10, and 33/36 for 1980.

Okay, lets try End. - The Sounds Of Disaster next.

1. Kindred -Burial

I have listened to Burial before, the Untrue album and i must say although Burial have a very recognisable style of chopped etheral R&B voices over long loops and harmonies and makes for a pretty interesting listen, i have always find it somewhat boring. This one, although a bit more intense still feels that way to me.

Kindred, the first track specially feels way too long. 11 minutes for the same beat is a bit much to me. The rain sounds that feels like white noise and the added dark textures are nice, though.
Loner is shorter, and therefore better. Etheral harmonies under a looping synth arpeggio. At the end, everything but the voices stops and it makes for a chilling moment.
Ashtray Wasp returns to the longer form with its 11''44 runtime. It has a bit more variety than Kindred, but still feels a bit boring to me. Around the middle of the track it stops and changes completely, with a continous click, a lot of colors and a nice piano.

Don't get me wrong, I find a lot of qualities in Burial's music, but maybe it is just not for me. I don't know why, because i can listen to William Basinsky looping and destroying the same tapes over four albums, but i don't get Burial.

The Sounds Of Disaster by End

Genre tags via RYM: Breakcore, Plunderphonics, Big Beat, Space Age Pop, Surf Rock, Big Beat, Television Music

If you understand what all of that means, then you can get an idea as to what this album sounds like. Essentially it's a Plunderphonics-type album that uses breakbeats and big beat tropes. However, most of the samples stay in a specific area like surf guitar. Som interesting production on a few tracks in which the whole track seems to get completely corrrupted and degrade to a glitch track before going back to a breakbeat track. This song kind of sums it up. Not all of it is great, but there was enought to keep me on my toes that I'll probably return to this soon.

Kurtis Blow by Kurtis Blow

I don't think I had heard any of the songs on this record before, but it's almost like I had heard some of them a hundred times. That's how many hip-hop tropes can be traced back to or through this foundational album. Blow himself, like most emcees of the early 80s, is known for being a groundbreaking rapper, not for being a great rapper. In fairness, the art of emceeing wouldn't exist in the way we know it today for several more years. And what he lacks in technique, he makes up for with energy. The a-side of this album is stocked with really good, danceable, funky disco rap songs, the most well-known being The Breaks. Unfortunately, things go off the rails in the last two tracks, where we get a lackluster and weird r&b attempt followed by a lackluster and weird rock attempt. This really should have been a 5-track, 30-minute album instead. Kurtis Blow is a fun record, and an historically important record, but don't mistake it for a great one. 3/5.

Non รˆ Poi Cosรฌ Lontano by Perigeo

An eclectic Jazz Fusion record that is apparently one of this band's lower rated. If that's the case, then I need to get on the others immediately, because I thought this was stellar. A great blend of technicality and accessibility in the same vein as a band like Weather Report. Actually, that's a pretty good comparison I'd say, so if you like Weather Report, then you'd probably find something to like here.
