It's better. It's funner. It's got more of a cohesive theme. The rapping is his best ever, consistently.

What somewhat kills the flow for me is that cluttered middle section with several skits. All of them great, but they should've been more spread out. I'd agree that his rapping here is on the same level as Madvillainy, but not better. More consistent? Maybe, except for that middle part. Food theme is great, agree. It makes the album that much more fun. But the production is a step below Madlib's (except for a few tracks), and there aren't as many highlights imo. The skits on Madvillainy are legendary too, and I like the "no chorus" approach. Mm... Food has its moments though, in fact it has a lot of good moments.

Hot take: Doom's own production suits Doom's rapping better than Madlib's.

I somewhat agree. But the beats on Madvillainy are so dope that any half-decent rapper would've sounded good over them. Pinata and Bandana are evidences as well (not that Freddie is "half-decent", but his style and Madlib's style don't match at all imo and yet he sounds fantastic over jazzy soul samples).

Kaleidoscope by Siouxsie And The Banshees

I love early Siouxsie And The Banshees. This album sets an eerie and twisted atmosphere right from the start, where things don't seem right, with the wonderful Happy House, and keeps it going - although I'm not sure about the Gary Numan sounding Lunar Camel that ends side one- but then the second half of the album ikicks off with Christine and immediately ncreases the trippiness element of their gothic rock post-punk, and from then on it's all great listening, with Skin being an excellent song to close the album with. I give it a really strong 8/10, which probably would have been higher if I had of heard this album closer to the time, and it just makes my top 10 for 1980 at 10/39.

O.L.D - Formula might be worth listening to.

You know, I don't care anymore if I get a large picture or not at this point. I was doing good and then I lost it. Oh well. But back on the album on hand and Wow! Before deciding to listen to this, I realized I was going to tackle this not only did I realized that this was a slowcore album, but also realized this album is over 70 minutes. And the last time I tackled an album in this style was The Lioness. And being miffed from that album kind of made me expect the worst. But, this was way better than I was expecting. There was a part of me that thought this was a 100. It tackled this similar quality that Suede's debut had where it had this rural plain quality that I really enjoy but it is more refined and would say almost realized vision. A lot of the tracks definite fit the 10/10 bill. Mark Kosleck vocals really meld well with the sound of the album and there are probably some verses or lines that will hit me on an emotional level. There is a specific point where it was about the car crash that kind of hit me.

So why not the 100? There are two points I would make. For one, while I wish a few of the songs had sprinkles of synthesizer or the shoegaze guitar tones to compliment the sound more, I understand why it isn't there. Since this was on the 4AD label, RHP wanted to make a distinct decision to not get pigeon hold by critics at the time. And I would still say what this album does, is enough to keep me occupied. The other point where I would have a issue and would say holds a little more ire would be how a few of the lengthy tracks especially by the back end of the album could have been trimmed down just a bit. Keep the little details that is brought up by the end of the track, cut maybe a minute or two and call it a day. But, this was still worthwhile and I am curious how the rest of Red House Painters discography would hold up.

Grade wise:95 but maybe a 100 with a revisit. Or if this is a 100, this would be a demi god in my usual listening habits. If anything else, this could be top 20 or more possible top 10 of 1993. Well in a canon sense.

Chief and Bay will be the same guess. Led, I don't know what he will pick and Purple would be either Pearl Jam or PJ Harvey.

Drum's Not Dead by Liars
Some beautiful melodies, especially in the quieter, less noisy/droney songs like Drum Gets A Glimpse. The vocals sometimes sound like Thom Yorke singing only with his high register voice, but it seemed to fit the songs rather well. Other times the deeper vocals kick in, and they're fine too. I'm not usually talking this much about vocals, but this album is centered around the tribal, repetitive beats and the beautiful melodies I was talking about earlier, and the vocals on top of those are what sticks out the most. They're hypnotic too, but add the much needed dynamic to songs. Well-crafted album, but maybe a bit too monotone and hypnotic for my tastes. And I'll mention the melodicism again: looping synths and gentle guitars were marvelous, sometimes reminding me of Robert Wyatt, Faust, Brian Eno and (gentler) Sonic Youth at the same time. The second side is less interesting, but Hold You, Drum is the only stinker in the tracklist (although it has a wonderful droney outro, like an out of tune slide guitar loop or something). 7.5 or 8/10

I was thinking about giving you PJ Harvey and Pearl Jam picks, but go with Debut for now.
