- Post subject: Which Tool / Gojira album should I listen to first?
|
My boyfriend is really into metal, so I've been trying to get into it. I've recently I've listened to three Metallica albums: The Black Album, Master Of Puppets, and Ride The Lightning. I thought Black was pretty good, I really liked Master Of Puppets, and Ride The Lightning was my favorite. My favorite genre currently is prog rock, bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, etc.
My boyfriend's favorite bands are Tool and Gojira. Based on what I just told you, which band should I try out first and which album should I listen to?

Gojira's Magma might not be their absolute best (although it's close imo), but it's really easy to get into, especially if you're into prog. Tool's Lateralus is the best and the perfect place to start. Glad you liked Metallica! _________________ Overall chart

Glad you liked Metallica, I think the order of preference is the same for me, Ride the Lightning is definitely my favorite.
I am really not a fan of Tool, but then again I've never been a fan of King Crimson either and I think Tool draws a ton of inspiration from them. I think if King Crimson is truly one of your favorites, then Tool is definitely worth listening to.
My recommendation is to have your boyfriend listen to one of YOUR favorite albums (that he hasn't listened to yet) for every new album you listen to. That way you're both diversifying each other's music taste. Alternatively, in my relationship I'm more of the music guru and my SO is more of the movie guru, so there's other ways to trade off.
And if you don't like Tool/Gojira, that's totally fine. You don't need identical tastes in music, but appreciating each other's preferences can totally help. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

I'm not really into Gojira (currently), but the best way to get into Tool would be to start with the debut and work your way through. Each album gets more experimental. _________________ Do it yourself and let me play my music: https://www.besteveralbums.com/thechart.php?c=61802

Tool is probably more accessible than Gojira. I'd start with their debut and move upward and see how you like their sound in album format, though I suspect you've heard a lot of Tool already from your partner. If it finds your fancy, there's a lot of alt metal in that sphere you may enjoy as well.

Danny Carey, drummer for Tool, is a Kansas boy. He's from Lawrenece, and, among the litany of basketball jereseys he wears during concerts, is always a KU jersey. So, Tool and I have always been fond of eachother. Gojira has less of an impact for me. I'd go with Tool's "Aenima" which has a good balance of commercial appeal and risk-taking.
I also agree with Gowi, in that, if you've already heard a lot of Tool, then maybe you could listen to some others within the same genre conventions.
