A fun classic hardcore punk album. 14 songs with none of them over 2 minutes in length, and a few under a minute. Good punky shouty vocals, some fast drumming, and enjoyable guitar sound, riffs, and the occasional short uncomplicated solo. Some humour, and some anti society messages. Everything a good hardcore punk album from 1980 should be. I've never listened to Circle Jerks before so it was cool when I heard a couple of songs here that I know as Black Flag songs, and then find out that the singer here was in Black Flag before this and bought these songs with him to Circle Jerks. 8/10, and 24/52 in my 1980 chart.

Hauntingly beautiful, I guess they say it's "Avant-Folk" but it transcends that title pretty easily. It's a Kranky album, so it has some Post Rock elements (mainly the length of the songs) but the album falls somewhere between improvisational and drone music. The reason being, it sounds like it could be improvisational at times, but I don't know that for sure. The vocals are certainly measured it out it seems, either that, or the vocalist just has a perfect sense for the music. Rarely do I point out vocals as being a strong point on an album, but she's great.

"Oh no! Late-period Swans dropped acid and freaked out! There's Michael Gira, huddled in a corner plucking away at this one guitar riff he's convinced is the most beautiful piece of music ever! There's Jarboe, wide-eyed and just flipping shit, mumbling "The sun falls the rain shines the sun falls the rain shines the sun falls the rain shines" like it's the most profound thing she's ever said--which it might be! And Norman Westberg? He's just kind of wandering around, knocking into wind chimes and shit. Thank God someone left the tape running!"

Well, this was interesting. From the jump I was put on my heels with the over the top production here. Track 1 is such a sensory overload of exuberant pop sounds I knew right away I was in for some intense stuff.
The rest of the album features some really cool and heavy bass grooves mixed with a buffett of other pop and rock ideas, horns and synth parts and so forth. There isn't really a moment on this album where it quiets down and gets introverted. The whole album is this exuberant explosion of sounds. It was cool, but it didn't move me to the degree that I would say I really liked it.
With some albums where I am caught off guard with the overwhelming force of the music, especially other pop albums that had this affect (examples being The Dreaming or even early Jellyfish) I also tended to be put off at first. This is an artist I'm intrigued by.
Her vocals and the whole kinda chirpy sound of her vocals and the melodies is so over the top that I am not totally in tune with it.
Anyway, some really cool pop and maximalist energy, kitchen sink productions here and I liked and respected it. 3/5

That was way better than I thought. I can't point at a reason as to why I wasn't as crazy for this. Maybe it was due to wanting a fuller sound with my electronic music? Maybe it was the old school sounds of the early 90's? Maybe it was a mood thing? I don't know? Out of those three sentences, I would say the first one would still be the reason why it wouldn't be higher than a light 9 out of 10. That and the intro/outro tracks where it is interesting and could be an inspiration towards Gorillaz Humanz opener. But otherwise the sounds on this album was so good. At this moment, it's better than Incunabula. And I'd argue this might hold up more since a lot of the textures and drums still have that special touch where I could tell the Hartnoll brothers put care into the album. Otherwise for an old school electronic album, go listen to it.

Jiminy Christmas, I wasn't expecting to read such a tragic backstory to this album. In 2006, a 16-year-old Brazilian teenager committed suicide by smoke inhalation while online. This is one of his posthumous albums of music that his father found on his computer after his death. I'm surprised by the tragedy, but almost more surprised that this was made by a 16-year-old, because it sounds more musically advanced than that. It fits somewhere between Sufjan Stevens and Mac Demarco, and it is essentially lyrically about killing himself. The music is actually pretty good, but I don't think that I'll be returning to this anytime soon due to the subject matter.

My god! This is honestly wonderful. This isn't my first time going through drone metal. I remembered really enjoying Boris Flood from 2000. But that record while excellent, I wouldn't have said that album kept me invested all the way through. This is that record where I could use a more visual explanation as to why I adore this. You start this record up while you sit on your expensive lounge chair, recline it to get comfy. Start grinning from ear to to ear that you hit some gold and let it take you away. Now for a detailed explanation, I love how these drones just suck me in and leave me relaxed while listening to this. I could use the term disassociate and it would fit the bill. I could also mention that while I did think Dopethrone was also an excellent album, I feel this established that hazy feeling that I wished Dopethrone had. Well in an intensity feeling. I don't know if this will be for everyone since that one Authur meme did pop up in my head, but if you love drone side of metal or if you are an ambient listener, give this a listen. And as of now, this is a top 10 contender for 1993. Still have 5 more pages for this year end and have at least seven albums where I would give a 100. Man this year be having some tight gold.

I've never been all-in on El-P as a rapper. Killer Mike is by far the better rapper in Run The Jewels. El-P is a great producer who can have interesting verses, but I don't think he has the voice or charisma of a top-tier emcee. And aesthetically, I'm often not a fan of his lyrics. He's one of the quintessential backpackers, and they're a very hit or miss side of hip-hop for me. That said, I had high hopes when trying my first solo El-P album, because despite those reservations I do love Company Flow and Run The Jewels.
The beats on Fantastic Damage are very nice, but El-P's lyrics here are both less vivid and more objectionable than his bars that I've heard elsewhere. Lots of f-slurs, r-slurs, and misogyny. And without a stylistic counterpoint providing breaks (apart from the features, many of which are not actually stylistic contrasts) a whole album of El-P drags a bit. With that criticism out of the way, there are a lot of good songs on this record, and even some dope songs. But overall, this effort lands in the pretty good zone for me. 3/5.

These normally make me cringe and hinder my enjoyment of the music but I didn't hear much of that in this album. Admittedly I wasn't reading along to the lyrics, but listening in my car while driving to and from work, but I was trying to pay as much attention to the lyrics as I could, even if I missed a lot of them. Either way they didn't stand out and weren't unavoidably noticeable as they sometimes are when they annoy me. I do agree Killer Mike is the better rapper but I did enjoy this album, especially musically with the beats and production. I liked this more than Funcrusher Plus.
It has a bit since I heard a record from Unwound. The last one being the 01 record where I quite enjoyed it, but can't say why. Maybe it was an ambitious record but doesn't hit that special high. While this record while can be a bit one note. Especially that certain tone that exists throughout the album. But I would say this album has an energy and mood that at its best moments hits a particular vibe. Especially doing a long day of work. I would say why this isn't higher than a solid 8 or number wise an 85, would be compared to the Earth album, the riffs don't suck me as much. As well as this doesn't feel complete. But still for a rock album that can be harsh, give it a listen if that is your thing.
