This is the first time I listened to anything related with Crowded House. Well unless there hit in the United States, which I have heard a bit of it. But back to this album, this was quite great. I think what prevent this to hit a higher grade for me, would be wanting some more pizazz within the sound. It does hit a certain mark for me, but there is a certain push that I do want. As well as not crazy about track 2 as well as the outro. But otherwise quite an entertaining album.

I got really into King Gizz in 2017 when they insanely released 5 albums in one year, most of which were unique and solid. I have been hook, line, sinker since. This really was no different. Fantastic album.
2. Sheryl Crow-Tuesday Night Music Club would be my pick. I've heard hype for Type O Negative and have liked other Manic Street Preacher albums. But there's something classic about Sheryl Crow I dig.

I am not one of these music lovers that love to hate on U2. They have quite a few songs I love, one album I really like (Zooropa), a few decent albums, but sometimes their music does nothing for me, so I'm more on the fence, take them or leave them, and judge each song/album on it's merits. It was interesting to hear their debut album, and I guess that's my problem with this. It sounds like a debut album, and of it's time. To me it sounds like what a lot of other cool bands where doing at the time, that post-punk sound, but without any of the experimentalism or individualism of the ones that stand out for me. But the ambition is there. They have musical chops, and looking back I wonder if I can hear the desire to be a bigger stadium rock band in this album or if I'm just imagining it with the benefit of hindsight. I Will Follow is a great song, and the closing track hints at what they soon become I think, but the rest is just good without being special. 7/10, and 50/55 for 1980.
Tough Choice, I want to give you them all but for different reasons. I'll give you Modest Mouse. I think it has that balance of pop and rock sensibilities with something a bit off kilter to the norm that might suit your taste.

I somehow never heard this album. This is weird considering I was 17 and the perfect audience for the arctic monkeys when this album became a big deal. I saw its ranked highly here on BEA. So I decided to listen to it (and it was nominated on the game thread so theres that too)
After one listen, I will say its certainly a solid rock and roll album, the energy is over the top in a good way, the songs are consistently pretty good, and the guitars have a jittery energy which is fascinating. I imagine if I had bought this album when I was a young man I would have really really connected with it - after all I did fall for The Strokes and The White Stripes for similar reasons. I even had a little love affair with the Libertines and Bloc Party. Again, it was weird I never listened to this back then.
The album does give off a swag and an "attitude" I don't connect with. I probably wouldn't have fallen for this aspect even when I was young. I think it strikes me as a put-on. Like a band which is puffing its chest out a bit, ready to stick it to the man and be just as badass as their forebears like the clash, and to show that they were just as badass as those american bands getting all the attention when this album was recorded. Now, that is rock and roll, that's an attitude as integral to rock music as it gets, but for some reason, just for me, it falls a little flat here.
The other elements of the sound, like the active and pummeling drums and the very active and cool bass lines are also very cool.
Maybe its the fact that I am just not in the mood for badass rock music in general, or maybe its because i'm 31 years old at my home office writing this stale review whilst checking work emails, maybe its because I'm literally hungry, but this torrent of badass riffs, basslines, vocal explosions, and drum beats hasn't moved me. I have listened to this arguably "Classic" rock and roll record as if I'm standing back from a painting with hand on my chin, I am saying "hmmm quite interesting....ooh, that was a nice little touch there... oh cool riff there, intriguing" and I am not actually in there as an active participant. I have a feeling if I had never heard Highway 61 Revisited and you played that album for me now, I wouldn't even stand up and get super excited for that (arguably the greatest rock and roll album ever created)- I'm just in a pretty numb and vanilla mood i guess.
Still i can hear why this was a bit of a phenomenon back in 2006. Not really my thing but It's a good listen and I'm glad I listened. 3/5

I do argee with you Round The Bend. Sheryl Crow's debut album does have that quality where I could see where some would it as a classic. One of the best things about this is that this does have this homey quality to it. And I would say the album is quite nuance on a production. And I would say the first five tracks and some of the tracks in the back end of the album that are pretty great. It just that middle bit of the run where I start to lose a bit of interest with the album. I can't tell you exactly why that is, but it just happens. Still waiting for a country/folk record that can keep the Mazzy Star and Counting Crows albums some company.

(2) Mercury, I would have given you Charmed since it is a house album and it does keep up with variety as well as the pay offs on certain tracks. But its 3 hours. So Jessie Ware is the way to go.

There is not a bad or less than awesome song here. The detailed production is just soul-melting. Despite it being 25 degrees outside and me being stuck in the christmas malais, this album with its sunny, romantic, playful, sexy energy has somehow gotten me in a state where I am quasi-dancing while listening. How does it do that?
Well the bass lines and the beats are so infectious and the melodies and vocals over the top are catchy and earnest without being too serious. The 70s and 80s keyboard and synth parts throughout just put a smile on my face. And even the vocals which at first I was a bit meh about grew on me on my second listen.
The first 2 tracks are good at setting the mood without being the best on the album. They just sorta set me up to absolutely bust when the funky bass bass of "Ooh La la" shows up on the scene. This whole song is fabulous in every way. But somehow this is just the start of a blitzkrieg of delicately, meticulously crafted pop dance bangers. Track 4 "Soul Control", with its bouncy bass and the harmonized vocals just consume me.
the next couple tracks take the gorgeous production and sweet vocals to a more intimate and romantic place - "Save a Kiss", "Adore You", and "In Your Eyes" make me feel like damn, I need to get up and brush myself off and find a lady. These three songs are just so romantic and warm and somewhat sexy. I especially adore 'Adore You".
After the good, if not particularly interesting to my ears, "Step Into My Life", the album gets luscious with "Read My Lips". What a great song! The melody is somehow just so great, the synth and bass are just so dated (in a great way), the whole thing sounds like I prime MJ or Prince song and somehow it manages to not be bogged down by these comparisons. This song just perfectly executes the sound and style and I really love this track. Also, I have had this experience of being shy and not taking a hint. And its fun hearing from Jesse the perspective of the other person in those scenarios. Anyway, that was yet another awkward side comment.
Finally, the last 2 songs are stellar as well. Especially I think the closer "Remember Where You Are" is such a lush and sweet song. A near-perfect closer for this upbeat, beautiful album.
Yeah I really liked it. 4/5. Thanks for reccing it... I may have never listened otherwise.
And I think I will go ahead and listen to that epic 3 hour DJ Sabrina album. It will be a bit broken up over several listens. But that is a genre I have always wanted to delve into. You who come next can still nominate it, but I will be listening to it anyway.

We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse
Somehow this didn't resonate with me like other Modest Mouse albums have. It feels a little more safe I guess. Still a pretty well made record and clearly Modest Mouse, who I like. Maybe it will be like Boy was for me upon first listen, whereby I was expecting The Joshua Tree... but Boy really grew on me over the years, and now love it. Do I like it more than Zooropa... no. It's funny how U2 has very little consensus on what's best. (of course the following is all subjective prejudice based on my experiences) If it's the Pitchfork regurgitates it usually is their post punk era that's their best. If it's the alternative rock guru, it's Unforgettable Fire to Achtung Baby, and if it's a darker more sophisticated type, they love Zooropa and Pop (and almost nobody else gets the irony/darkness of it). And then there's some pretty good consensus (but not 100%), that after about 2005, they just went the way of The Rolling Stones post 1982.

So I think after the next two albums, I will be that particular metal run for 1993. And while I do like this more than the Tool album. It is more direct, and keeps it self interesting with the riff changes, and vocally it is quite good. Somewhat brooding. But, there is a few things that prevent it from being an all time favorite. For one and I think the biggest one, is that this didn't suck me in fully. There are points where while this is a short project, at times it can blend into one another. As well as wanting something a little more atmospheric. I think the Earth album might have set the standard with me and metal. Thought there are more metal albums coming real soon.
Otherwise it is a 90 and would range a strong 8 to a light 9.

The production on this album is dope. Clearly standing on the shoulders of Memphis rap giants from decades prior, and yet it sounds totally fresh. It's at its best when at its most luxurious and/or its most psychedelic. The rapping is not outstanding, but Lil Ugly Mane is quite solid technically. Lyrics are probably the biggest sticking point here for me. I like the lyricism on many of the songs, and dislike it on a number of others (mostly forays into horrorcore or bad sex raps). But with a few exceptions, the lyrical missteps don't derail my enjoyment of the music. Really good record. 3.5/5.

While the Doolittle to Bossanova transition I wasn't a fan, the Trompe le Monde reminded me quite a bit of what I love from 90s R.E.M. and very much liked this record. Interesting to see them kinda go more mainstream compared to their earlier releases I'm more familiar with. Super glad I got to this one.
