The reason a lot of people shit on the 80s is because so many musicians from the 60s and 70s tried to keep up with the times with usually lackluster results. But, with hindsight being what it is, I want to check out some albums by bands that I like that I've certainly ignored up to this point.

This was definitely an improvement over Pink Flag - though I have to thank both Mercury and babyBlueSedan for their comments and I'm gonna give a try to the two other Wire albums babyBlueSedan suggested and maybe I'll change my mind on them. Anyway, this is not an album I would listen to with full attention-maybe I should, as I randomly caught some interesting lines-, but as background music it's extremely effective. Simple and relaxing vocals/guitar, just what the doctor ordered after a tiring and stressful day. Another thing I liked is how balanced it is. It is clearly influenced by everything that preceeded it, but not too much, it has a modern vibe too. I am reasonably confident I could approximately guess when it came out hadn't I already known it, which is usually tricky in this genre. One complaint would be that the opening track sets the bar a bit too high and the rest of the album struggles to catch up. Still, no moments where I felt it dragged or it got dull, even the last track was ok despite my initial fear that it would be too long, I have to say it's been my favorite album of this game so far, I'm gonna say 75/100, with a chance of moving slightly higher up in further listenings.

This is really cool. The first half or 2/3s even were consistently great. Never did get fully into the voice of the rapper. But the lyrics were good wholesome fun and detailed and great and the production is consistently brilliant. Toward the end I was growing tired of the album a little. This also was when they leaned a bit more into the noise and left some of the more catchy and groovy stuff behind. Also Horrorcore can have a subtle draining effect on me. Like, I'm never horrified or discgusted, but just ever so slightly throughoutr the album I got more and more downbeat and i guess more and more in the groove of the music. Still its subtle and some of the satanic and horrible shit was just awesome. 7.5/10

It has been a bit since I have listened to Lovesliescrushing. A personal fave of mind for taking the shoegaze tropes while adding more drone and ambient. Even compared to the big three for shoegaze, I wouldn't be surprised when listeners heard this where shocked or somewhat miffed by this. Because while I do find this to be an excellent album, this record shares a bit of debut itis for me. Has some evocative tracks and those interludes that strike a chord still feel unique. But I do find there later albums hit a that sweet spot for me way more. Before finishing this today, I was going to get this done yesterday. And doing that I wanted to hear some moments from Xuvetyn, there follow up. And that album hits. So a huge recommendation for people who want something different for shoegaze, listen to it. But I wouldn't be shocked if you prefer their other albums. Grade:90

An album that shares some similarites with the previous one -Time (The Revelator)- in terms of having a country/americana/folk background, but quite different nonetheless. This clearly had a more modern vibe, at points it moved closer to alternative and to rock- which was obvious both in the vocals and in the instrumentation-, so it was easier on my ears. Also, this was more captivating, it wasn't just for background music, it demanded your attention with its energy - this doesn't necessarily mean that it's better, it's just that it works under different circumstances. The female vocas in Peoria Lunch Box Blues were another nice touch, though my favorite song of the album is easily I've Been Riding With The Ghost. Still, consistency was great, not a single weak track. I'm gonna give the same rating, 75/100, but this could also rise in the future.

If someone came to me and said this was a disappointment compared to there debatable best album Heaven And Las Vegas, there is a bit of understanding for that. But I would say anything after that would have that kind of reaction. Though I would disagree since I do adore this album. After two years from listening to this for the first time, I can't say there is anything wrong with it. I think the biggest difference compared to this album and Heaven is that Heaven through its run time is enveloping and you could get sucked into the hazy soundscapes. While Four Calendar except for the last two tracks, there is that particular quality of Cocteau Twins of getting lost but it has that quality of viewing the world rather than being part of it. And while I do prefer the former as well enjoy the balance of the two, some of my all time favorite albums share that quality, the latter can be hit or miss for me. Oddly Ulver's 1997 album is one of those albums. But this doesn't have that problem at all. Each track still hits my heart and soul. Still immaculate. I think the only thing that has me a little hesitant is I need to give there last album from 1996 a revisit. Remember loving that. But yeah, still a 95 for me. I'd argue this is a little over a hair with Souvalki but Painful and Mezcal Head are better albums.
P.S. I love that album cover. It takes me back when I viewed the I Spy books when I was a kid.

Well, what can I say about this album? Its really good, great even, at creating an incredible atmosphere, building it up, and just transporting you to another place. Its actually a very heady album with its insane musical crescendos, the riffs are great but they are so overpowering they almost stop sounding like traditional metal riffs after a short time, like the guitars start surrounding you like these massive trees while you're running through a thick wood. The drums are maybe the most insane thing here, how does a human play that fast and that intensely for any amount of time? It boggles my mind. The songs themselves are very interestingly arranged and probably (actually I am 100% sure) I didn't get the full brilliance and detailed greatness of the arrangements from 1 intense listen. Emotionally I was even somewhat engaged on that level. I sometimes get a liottle bored or uninterested in the mood of a technical piece of music. And while that was a little the case with this album, I will say I was more moved by this music than most other death metal albums. Almost had atmospheric sludge metal levels of intense emotional bits - like parts that reminded me a little of the heavy and despairing element of Neurosis classics. I don't know. I'm rambling. I quite "enjoyed" this, it was a trip. 7-8/10

2020 was a year I barely listened to new music, so it was nice having the chance to check some of the stuff I've missed. Thematically this was as 2020 as it gets. Can't say I liked it, but it was an interesting listen for sure. Credit is mostly due to the production, it is based on a heavy electronic background and is willing to try various things. Most of them were far from my taste and I can't say I found them catchy, but that's irrelevant, at least they tried-unlike most modern pop albums. No complaints about the vocals either, they did fit the overall sound. Forever is clearly the highlight of the album, no doubt about it, though Visions was an excellent closer. So, a cool and refreshing album, I wish I liked it more. Let's say 65/100.
