This was released last week via Awesome Tapes from Africa and goddamn is it good. Nahawa Doumbia is one of the essential voices of Mali's Wassoulou sound, and for good reason. The grooves are beyond infectious.
Listened to this front to back while drinking my coffee this morning. Some of the best indie rock I've heard in a long time. The Slint comparisons are warranted but also reminds me of Lambchop and other mid 90s indie darlings who weren't afraid to fuck around with other genres.
Can't wait to get vaccinated so I can see this shit live!!! It's been too long. I miss my old haunts! Luckily there's been tons of new music released by Lice, Shame, Viagra Boys that is getting me pumped to see some live shows!!!
That one is fantastic, reminded me of Preoccupations at moments. I've known about the band for about a year but have never given them a chance until now, great stuff. I'll give it a second listen today, but it's probably the best thing I've heard the whole year. UK (and Irish) post punk scene has been killing it lately, great albums being dropped on a weekly basis lol.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention! Her first two records on Awesome Tapes are something my wife returns to frequently; she was excited to listen to more recent happenings from Doumbia this morning.
For "Bandcamp Friday" (during which Bandcamp waives their fee and all proceeds go to the musician/label you buy it from) I picked these up. I chose these particular releases not just out of interest but also because the proceeds would go directly to the musicians, rather than labels.
From Cristian Alvear's page. Cristian is a very kind and generous, personally and performance-wise, guitarist dedicated to performing new music compositions. This one is an hour long piece featuring the Chilean ensemble LOTE, which I find particularly special because avant-garde music from that continent is so underrepresented. But it's there! (On a similar note, a recent earworm has been Michael Winter's - a composer also trying to bring visibility to the S. American avant-garde - single track.) Haven't listened in full yet but listeners should expect the intimacy frequently associated with wandelweiser recordings.
From Matthias Müller's page. Matthias is one of the most distinctive trombonists making music today, particularly notable for using breath and fluid flow through the trombone as sonic material. This one is a bit more sounded, with another great trombone talent in Muche; for fans of the overdubbed wanderings of George Lewis or Albert Mangelsdorff.
From Ernst Karel's page. I'm unfamiliar with Karel's work, but in this longstanding duo (for which this is a return after a decade-long hiatus) the electronics musician pairs up with oboist Kyle Bruckmann (who also plays English horn, electronics, and electric organ here) for dynamic electroacoustic soundscapes.
From Nate Wooley's page. This is a pre-order for a mid-April release, but Nate is starting promotion for what will undoubtedly be an important release for the year. Nate is another musician that is kind and generous personally and in performance. This release marks a new direction in his music that began with his various Battle Pieces and the amazing Seven Storey Mountain VI from last year. That direction is composing for improvisers in such a (personalized) way that makes them comfortable enough to get uncomfortable and take exciting performance risks, which is based out of a desire to make something truly new and reflect societal values that recognize that music is made by people, complex unique beings that have the capacity to individually make truly unique music (but brings them together for a communicative, supportive, subversive ensemble environment).

Not only is this is a very solid release, but it's leagues ahead of Doumbia's (already pretty good) 80's work. Fantastic production, great grooves, and all the playing is top-notch. Gets an easy rec from me. I remember it was going to get a release sometime last year, but I think it was pushed a couple months back. Probably the best choice, I think it'll land in people's laps a bit easier with an early 2021 release.
Haven't heard the Daniel Knox record, but I've seen it floating around. It'll go in the queue. _________________ Doubles & Conch

The popularity of this one has always surprised me. I kinda just tossed it out there, but it's always seems to get a decent response. I made it rather hastily during a particularly boring class my first semester of University :lol:. Glad people enjoy it.

I'm kind of feeling Black Country New Road's reworked singles are a little too polished compared to the hype I felt for them on the original recordings but it's solid. I'm pretty sure whatever uranium club releases this year will probably make my top 3 post punk releases by years end
