Tree's comeback has been the most pleasant surprise in hip-hop these past two or three years. He deserves way more attention. Love his weathered, bluesy sing-rapping. A truly brilliant everyman rapper, and a super distinctive producer to boot. Long live Tree. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
The new Arab Strap album is actually genius. My favourite album of its kind since Perils from the Sea. Can only hope Adrian Moffat isn't outchea doing Louis C.K. cosplay. He really is one of his generation's best lyricists, and the Strap have been sorely missed. This is the sort of sordid, navel-gazing, peculiarly Scottish existential dread I can get behind. The only language I understand these days tbh, besides absurdist Michigan gun puns.
Happy to hear this. I've been meaning to check it out. I loved the record he put out as Nyx Nรณtt last year but that's very different than an Arab Strap record. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
Ditto this, and a wonderful improvement on their album released a little over a year ago. Reminds of shoegaze/drone bands, especially Boris or even Fishmans. But Parannoul have a distinctly unique feel, incorporating elements of emo and being maybe a little more rock-focused rather than experimental drone. This is likely falling into my top 3 of 2021, I wouldn't be surprised if it stays in the top 10 at years end. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!
New Vijay Iyer Trio, Lambchop, L'Orange, Sharon Van Etten, Hiatus Kaiyote, Lightning Bug, Armand Hammer, Lydia Ainsworth, Laura Mvula, and Loraine James albums, as well as a SOPHIE-produced EP by Basside, have been announced.
Quite the new slate.
And yeah, the Parannoul album is excellent. _________________ Doubles & Conch
Well my top two hip-hop albums of 2021 so far have both been produced exclusively by Harry Fraud. Jim Jones at #1 and now Benny at #2.
I'm in the process of wrapping up a Griselda custom chart and I think The Plugs I Met 2 will be in the upper echelon of Griselda releases (top 15 for sure), even though it's maybe my 4th or even 5th favorite from Benny. His discography is really coming together as not only the most consistent in Griselda but one of the most consistent in the entire modern East Coast scene. Benny can't miss and Harry Fraud is a great fit to produce for Benny.
Slums affiliated rappers Pink Siifu & Fly Anakin team up once again after a great project last year. I haven't heard this one yet but I'm sure it's at least very good. I'm thinking about making a custom chart for this scene as well since I'm a huge fan of a lot of the rappers and producers affiliated but we'll see... that'll be a lot of work and additional listening I'm not sure I have the time for atm.
Beautiful ambient and chamber music from Czechia. Kept putting it off for some reason, but it's very good. _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart

This is lovely, thank you for sharing.
Picked up a bunch of Bandcamp releases recently and have to recommend the following:

House Music by Bell Orchestre
Mostly instrumental, experimental jazz but with a violin and electronic elements as well. Not quite "free" jazz but it's definitely a good bit of improvisation.

No Branches Without Trees by Steven Van Betten & Andrew Rowan
Mostly acoustic folk/chamber pop with soundscape/field recording elements as well. Focused on the American southwest, in particular the Mojave desert at the border of California and Nevada. Wonderful photography in the artwork too. The physical release contains a few more photographs which are gorgeous and frame-worthy.
