When this album was originally released it was under the name Thunderbird Service
which was basically Lancaster and Khan Jamal, but now Kosmos Jazz out of Paris is
re-releasing this deep groove that features tunes such as Coltrane's Dahomey Dance
[from Olรฉ Coltrane (1961)] and a 10 minute rendition of the Sanders/Thomas tune,
The Creator Has a Master Plan [from Karma (1969)]. A devotional journey through
Great Black Music, from Africa to Coltrane, from Spirituals to Now, searching for
the Source behind the forms.
It's a re-release that will soon be coming out,
but the original (as: Thunderbird Service: Soul Unity)
came out on Light in the Attic in 2009, so this new
announcement sent me back to that one. If the
sonic quality of the others on Kosmos Jazz is an
indicator, I'm expecting the re-release to sound great!
This one is also a reissue - of the original 1972 Mexican psych-rock album
of theirs called Love, but this reissue has an added 11 (!) bonus tracks to
fry your tamales in heavy wah-wah and acid folk. Similar to the Argentine
band Almendra or, closer to home, Los Dug Dug's from Durango, Mexico.
