That last post from me was mostly about trying to set the tone for this thread overall. I do want everyone to feel free and unhindered to share whatever comes to their mind no matter how much knowledge they may or may not have about any particular genre or scene.

And this Friday three releases to which I'm really looking forward and all three bands will be playing in Belgium later on so difficult choice:
This Stupid World by Yo La Tengo: the first three released tracks give good hopes that they are returning to form after some lesser albums. I've seem them live a few times but I definitely would like to see them again.
Taken by Force by Civic: Future Forecast was my favorite album of 2021 and I called it a mix between The Saints and Hรผsker Dรผ and the two already released tracks make me hope for the best.
Breaking The Balls of History by Quasi: doesn't seem too bad either after listening to the first released tracks but they'll have to convince me by the rest of the album.

No Hashish, No Change Money, No Saki Saki by Bardo Pond
I saw the album wasn't yet created on BEA so I did but I doubted whether to enter it as a 2023 release or as a 1993 one as it was originally only released as a Cassette. But all the tracks seem to have been recorded in 1993 so I think it makes sense to regard it as an album of that year as well.
Bardo Pond was on my radar but I have never listened to an album of them before so I don't know if it was a good thing to start with this rough diamond but I suppose it only makes me want to listen to the rest of their catalogue as well.
It feels as Sonic Youth gone the most psych sounding Yo La Tengo and I suppose it's no wonder that Kim Gordon wrote an interesting comment on their Bandcamp page for the re-release of this album.
It's a bit surprising that most of the tracks are so long as it is not always a good thing in fact mostly because of the bad quality of the recording. But I think the album is at least interesting and it certainly deserves a place in my 1993 top chart.
And I will definitely listen to their other albums as well. Which album do you advise to start with?

An indie project from Ohio, Alexander Mikel taps into his fondness of the Elephant 6 label within an indie folk, lo-fi aesthetic. You can hear the trappings of Neutral Milk Hotel, The Gerbils, Elf Power, etc. in his songwriting and I think its probably one of the better releases in early January. Worth a look for fans of that kind of thing. I think it has some of the best lyrical songwriting I've heard in this kind of music in a while.

In the end, I really wasn't blown away by anything released that first week. I would say the obvious headline was Iggy Pop.

That's a very good question.
Of my listened list of records from this week, I'd have to say it was a no contest type of week since it actually has a classic in its midst that I advise everyone check out.
I wrote a little about the albums I liked and disliked, but not every single one down the docket. To summarize my thoughts with a clear head:
Everyone who likes rap music should listen to Skyzoo's new record. It's somehow better than his previous works and this guy has been at it for over a decade now.
Odium is so far one of the strongest metal albums of the year. It's not often I run into blackened sludge and not the same old meandering post-rock masquerading as sludge. This is not to say post-metal overall is bad, I'm just largely tired of it being showcased even when it is inspired.
Oroku Saki is an MF Doom-inspired affair and makes great use of samples from the original TMNT cartoon alongside some of the best verses I've heard all year. Check it out.
As Rocky pointed out and my past impressions said, Mansion's Second Death is an interesting blend of ethereal wave and doom metal. Interesting story behind it, too.
Ruinthrone ends up channeling one of my favorite power metal bands of all time: Wuthering Heights. It's a folky progressive power metal record that is really palatable and for me personally a big grower.
Endless is Leiah's comeback after years out of the game. A old school emo group with some midwest trappings, they tap into some anthemic indie rock here to make something that's pretty solid.
Crom's latest is the most fully formed the project has been so far. Pretty above average folk metal in the vein of Tyr's older material.
A lot of people dislike Circa Waves newest one but I found it enjoyable to a great deal. It's a bit "remember what indie used to sound like in the 2000s?" at times, but it is very fun.
Whitehorse is a Canadian songwriter duo who I've always been apathetic towards despite loving Luke Doucet's solo work some years back. Probably their strongest. Taps into old school nashville sound with some modern country rock twists. Worth a listen or two.
Delalma is a Spanish metal group that reminds me of Mago De Oz without... Mago De Oz's folk metal influences. It's pretty serviceable.
Obituary's newest is fine but I prefer their contemporaries.
Liela Moss' album didn't impress me but it had a few good songs.
I found the new B&S rather inconsistent and incohesive in general. I think it has some of the worst songs in their catalog, but also some songs that are above average at the same time. Feels like they don't know what they want to do and are just trying to get some radio play in the UK. Mixed bag. Consensus hates it.
Beyond the Black is pretty generic symphonic metal of its kind. Has a song or two worth hearing I suppose.
Skyblazer and Screamer are awful. Some of the worst metal I've heard with one of the worst vocal fits I've heard in anything. skipskipskip.
