Ha! Actually I never spoke on those 2 albums. The reason being they both were chronologically early on both literally and in terms of me doing this project. If you recall initially I was focused on those few albums that very directly influenced Thrash Metal. I did not deem either as fundamental building blocks toward thrash. Then by the time 1982 came around I was doing more and more and more albums not really directly influential to thrash and now here we are way way off that original intent.
I may wanna revisit them. However I grew up with Fear and for some reason when I was 15 or so I decided “I don’t like Fear”. I think I thought it was too gross and scummy. Idk. I honestly forget what turned me off, but I haven’t revisited it in a decade and a half.
As for Flipper; it’s wild stuff and I finally checked it out a few months ago. While I respected how crazy and transgressive it was and is; I didn’t enjoy listening to it that day. Certainly one I should revisit now and see if me being in a different headspace will change my perspective. _________________ -Ryan

@Repo, I had 7 of those 13 on my '84 queue already, but Running Wild, Cirith Ungol, Avenger, Piledriver, Helstar and Overdrive are new possible additions. Some of those looks super SUPER 1980s Heavy Metal and that aesthetic can scare me away. BUT I know some of those are pretty highly regarded Heavy Metal albums for their day.

Ha! Yeah, I caught myself nodding my head when you said Fear were early NY Hardcore lol... even though I knew that they were LA punks. Something about their sound and the singers voice and ESPECIALLY the song "I Love Living In The City" screams New York City during the late 70s, don't they?

I spent a few months on 1984 last year and I'm still amazed I still have so much more to find throughout the year. This is why I often don't like people writing off years (past or present). There's always something interesting in the crates, especially if you have only surface knowledge or knowledge of your favorites. Might focus a bit on the 80s again this year, I'm not sure when, but its one of those decades I find interesting. One of the all-time great transitionary period decades.

Very very true regarding people saying this or that year is weak or thin on great stuff. Like, the year I listened to BY FAR the most music (2021) also features a much greater amount of favorites for me than any other year in the last decade or 2. Why? Just because I explored much more that year than is usual. As I'm discovering with 1983, a year I would have previously said was "weak", these years also contain lots of goodies. There are years where it seems that within certain genres or umbrellas of music you reach a zenith or a peak and there are classics left and right popping off. I'd say 1984 is a year like that with Indie rock and punk and metal offshoots. 1986, 1994, 1969, etc... it just feels like to me there are a lot of albums that defined genres those years. But 1981 or 1983 are years that when I dig in I see a lot of influential and maybe overlooked records to love.
Also agree, the early to mid 1980s were a fascinating time in music... outside of the obvious MACRO changes like the introduction of CDs, and MTV and the end of the 1970s and all that that decade brought to the table culturally, there is also the immediate fall out of the nuclear bomb that was the Punk Revolution of 76-77. There are other major transitional factors to keep in mind, but those are things that interest me the most. _________________ -Ryan
