My first taste of alcohol was from a can of beer my dad allowed me to take a sip from when I was a little boy. It was horrible, and the best way to describe it was "that tastes like dog piss".

I soon got over the foul beer taste and found alcohol came in many variations. I locked in on vodka pre-mixed drinks, kind of like soda but with a strong vodka kick. This got me through my party years which also introduced me to bourban. Bourban was easy to drink with cola but it gave me massive hangovers the following morning and my dad mowing the lawn just outside my window at 5am did not help. I reckon he did it on purpose.

During my early working years i found beer was more of a social drink and learnt dark ales were more to my taste and not how I remembered my first encounter with alcohol. In fact I found I was struggling to remember anything as a result of the intensity of the drinking sessions i was involved in.

I decided to take a break from alcohol, reassess my relationship with it. I found I wasnt really benefiting. My health would be suffering, relationships with people i care about werent as great as they once were, focus on work deteriorated, hangovers took up weekends, cost me $'s and influenced my behaviour.

I realize people all over the world enjoy a drink of something, so I want to know the reason why. Thats the purpose of the poll, help me understand why people are drinking?

i rarely drink anymore due to a brief episode of alcoholism in 2007.. although i do still enjoy it in a social context.. my definition of 'being sober' is to be at the point where you can enjoy a drink at your own conscious discretion instead of using it as a form of self-medication.. so yeah, i still get pissed! just not on my own or at 9am!

Drinking is fun. I believe that drinking makes people friendlier and happier.

Don't drink - don't like the taste of alcohol (could be due to my first taste of it being a warm Budweiser when I was 6, which should be enough to turn anyone off of it), don't like to be out of control of my faculties, and lastly don't want to tempt fate as my parents are both alcoholics (though my mother, at least, went through AA and has been on the wagon for about 12 years).

Love the options!

I rarely drink but when I do it's as a way to relax and feel more comfortable, confident & happy. Also can be used to temporarily drown sorrows and alter consciousness. I think sex is a lot better without alcohol (unless you're not that attracted to the person). I'm a total lush though, perhaps is why I don't drink very much. I'm such an Apollonian that when I get drunk I get very rambunctious, like a little child. I'm definitely more of a cannabis smoker.

Alcohol
Written by: Ray Davies
Published by: Davray Music Ltd.

Lyrics:

Here's a story about a sinner,
He used to be a winner who enjoyed a life of prominence and position,
But the pressures at the office and his socialite engagements,
And his selfish wife's fanatical ambition,
It turned him to the booze,
And he got mixed up with a floosie
And she led him to a life of indecision.
The floosie made him spend his dole
She left him lying on Skid Row
A drunken lag in some Salvation Army Mission.
It's such a shame.

Oh demon alcohol,
Sad memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would say,
Damn it all and blow it all,
Oh demon alcohol,
Memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol.
Sad memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol.

Barley wine, pink gin,
He'll drink anything,
Port, pernod or tequila,
Rum, scotch, vodka on the rocks,
As long as all his troubles disappeared.
But he messed up his life, went and beat up his wife,
And the floosie's gone and found another sucker
She's gonna turn him on to drink
She's gonna lead him to the brink
And when his money's gone,
She'll leave him in the gutter,
It's such a shame.

Oh demon alcohol,
Sad memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would say,
Damn it all and blow it all,

Sad memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would fall,
A slave to demon alcohol.
