Chris de Burgh - The Lady in Red

Link

The biggest hit from Chris de Burgh, partially Irish, partially British, which hit number 1 in a few places and still gets a lot of play today.

It's a pop ballad dedicated to his wife (who he would famously cheat on with their 19 year old nanny while she was injured, make of that what you will).

And ultimately, it's still catchy, even if it's become a joke in large part these days.

Chris de Burgh also comes under ridicule in the Father Ted episode 'A Song for Europe', which gives me an excuse to post this...

David Bowie- Absolute Beginners

Link

A Bowie track that seems largely have been forgotten in time.

It's decent, but he's got much better tracks and I can see why this one was largely forgotten about.

Also apparently from a film of the same name (and a major flop which explains why I haven't heard of it).

Genesis - Invisible Touch

Link

Just a great pop track from Genesis, one of, if not their best hit.

The album is decent too but this is just a great booming pop song, and what Phil Collins does best, the second Genesis track to hit the top 50.

And this one makes its way up to the top 10, entering at number.

Just a belter that holds up on every listen in my opinion.

Simple Minds - All The Things She Said

Link

A decent synth pop effort from Simple Minds' 7th studio album.

Some of you may recognise this from radioplay in GTA V if you're so inclined.

It's good, just lacks some of the same pomp as their bigger hits, but you can enjoy it nonetheless.

A reasonable 64th place to make it the latest edition to the top 100 and not much more to add there.

The Housemartins - Happy Hour

Link

A band I'm a big fan of here, and this lands at number 5 fairly comfortably.

Just a great indie pop tune off a really good album, mad to me that the video above hasn't hit 1 million tunes.

I'm a big fan of Paul Heaton's voice for some reason, find it really soothing or something.

Not sure this is out and out my favourite Housemartins song, but it's very very good and catchy as hell, still holding up decades later.

Great.

Big Country - Look Away

Link

Very brief today as I'm under the weather.

Third Big Country track so far, decent but still probably my least favourite of the 3, though there's not much in it.

Falls a bit outside the top 50, but lands in at number 94.

Furniture - Brilliant Mind

Link

Another song that never really gets going for me, threatens to start up but just fades away really.

Furniture were an English new-wavey band that were around for over a decade actually, putting out 3 albums, but this their only big hit and it's certainly not something I've ever heard of before.

Midge Ure - Call of the Wild

Link

Second Midge Ure single to make the list.

This one being a non-album single that peaked at 27 in the UK.

A nice middle of the road new wave track that I've never heard before and likely will never hear again.

Not really my thing and not hooking me but it's fine.

160 seems to be a reasonable spot, lower than his previous entry for sure.

Wham! - The Edge of Heaven

An absolute belter and Wham's best song.

It needs no intro, this is going straight into the top 10, at number 6.

We once bought the best of Wham in a charity shop on a Scottish island for a bus trip, what a decision.
