It's hard to think of an artist like Leon Russell as underrated, but here we go.
Yes, Leon had a massive career that lasted from his high school days in the 1950's to his death in 2016. And yet...take a quick look at his standing here on BEA.
Russell was one of THE biggest stars in music in the 70's. He was Joe Cocker's musical director, and was on top in both rock and country music. He released 14 albums in that decade. Not counting his work as a sideman or guest. And yet, his self titled solo debut (above) is his highest ranking album on this site. At #9,411. It's his only album in BEA's top 17,000.
SEVENTEEN THOUSAND.
This album contains "A Song For You", one of the greatest American rock songs ever written. It also has the great "Delta Lady". The list of guest musicians is simply stunning:
George Harrison & Ringo Starr
Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood
Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett
Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts & Mick Jagger
Klaus Voorman
Joe Cocker
Merry Clayton
Jim Gordpon
Chris Stainton
I believe Leon's career deserves a closer look here. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold
