Every year, this question comes up, and if I got a nickel for every time I've said this...

My view is if a movie has a festival release one year, a wide release the following year, it should be eligible for both years. Who cares if a movie appears on a two different year lists? If it's good, it's good. Remember when You Were Never Really Here appeared on both our 2017 and 2018 lists? No big deal.

Who wouldn't want Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die on the 2025 list? The movie was a blast, Sam Rockwell being unhinged delivers! Juno Temple's flashback sequence nearly killed my friend from overlaughter. Personally I'm planning to put it on my 2025 list, and I'm planning to put it on 2026 a year from now. I didn't see it in 2025. Like everyone else, I saw it in Feb of this year.

Another reason I think movies like this should be eligible for two different years is we wouldn't want them to get overlooked due to release year technicalities. If you're on imdb or LB, filter movies by year, some things could be missed. Such as Presence, Friendship, The Day the Earth Blew Up, and The Shrouds. All four films are assigned 2024 on LB and imdb because of their festival release, but none received their wide release until 2025. None of these films appeared on our 2024 list, so this poll is their only shot now. I'm sure there are many others in the same boat.

I'm liking the cap at 25. I'm actually gonna have to make tough choices on which films to axe.

As much as I don't want it to get lostโ€” I enjoyed the film quite a bit, it's tonnes of funโ€” there's also part of me that sees its international debut being the '26 Berlinaleโ€”
I don't think I've ever had to deal with a 'does a Fantastic Fest release count?' situation :-kโ€” I'm surprised it didn't land TIFF... maybe it wasn't submitted, maybe it wasn't ready, maybe it was rejected, but it would've fit the festival's vibe very wellโ€”

BUT

As per my rules, set long ago, blah blah, it's labelled as '25 on IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes & Letterboxdโ€”
Soโ€”

Yeah, I'm on the fence (personally), but I'm not going to nitpick against the outlined rules, otherwise I'd go madโ€”
It'll be allowedโ€”

currently watching The Secret Agent. It totally reminds me in ways of a Wes Anderson movie. Does anyone else get that vibe?! Regardless, I'm loving it so far. Just finished the telegram scene which was hysterical.

Hmm, no I cannot say it reminded me of Wes Anderson. It reminded me of 70s-era espionage films such as The Parallax View and Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion. Nonetheless, I thought the movie was great, and I hope you give it a ringing endorsement and help usher it into our Top 10!

Been quiet on this thread lately, need more posts and lists. I assume you're using AgainstMeAgainstYou's list?

Oh cool! Will have to check those two out. I LOVE film from the '70s. Probably my favorite decade for movies.

No. I haven't seen AMAU's list. Did he post it here? I know he's pretty knowledgeable with film stuff.

^That was more directed at Hayden, but no I haven't seen AMAY's list shared on this thread.
However, last year on the 2024 thread, AgainstMeAgainstYou wrote:
you can always utilize my Letterboxd in times where I cannot be reached.
So we know his list is fair game, (and another big fan of The Secret Agent doesn't hurt).

Secret Agent paid homage to those paranoia-fueled espionage films of the 70s, but I liked how it nodded to The Omen and Jaws, as well. Those two films also had dread and paranoia, but the way the kid begged his father and grandfather to see them was charming, a bit of family-bonding. Repo, were you a fan of the movie?

Nah. My full list will be closer to 20. Just showing where The Secret Agent fell in my rankings. Is it (The Secret Agent) in your top 25, Hayden?
