- Post subject: Zero rank from unused charts
|
|
Just a query. I see that the albums in charts that haven't been used for 10 years aren't ranked. That's fine if users no longer visit the site. My question is that I was looking at the charts that have The Living Ends album White Noise in them. There's a user 'sheep21' who has the album in his overall Top 100, Top 100 of the 2000's, & Top albums of 2008. The 2008 chart was updated in 2020 so the ranking stands. The 2000's chart was last updated in 2013 and the ranking is logged. However the Top100 overall which was also updated in 2013 has the notice of having zero rank due to not being updated. And it's within these charts that the albums get a sizable numeral ranking. So just wondering, if a user has been logged into the site within the last ten years regardless of what chart they're modifying, shouldn't all charts for that user have a valid ranking. Just curious as I like to keep up with the play of how the site operates as it's my favorite and most visited site on the internet. You're doing a fine job. Best site ever for music and record collectors.

Thanks for the kind words and for picking up on that issue. Points in overall charts are decayed on a daily linear basis over ten years (until they reach zero). This is mainly because an overall chart created over a decade ago won't include any albums from the decade since the chart was last updated (extrapolate into the future and you can see the problem where, as more overall charts get created, the majority won't represent newer music and the aggregate charts will then be skewed towards older albums, so the algorithm helps to even things out).
Decade and year charts (like sheep21’s 2008 or 2000s charts) are treated as a different case because they cover a discrete period, so a 2008 chart is always going to be an accurate snapshot of 2008, no matter when it was built or last modified, so those points don't require the same decay. (The only minor exception here is if a year or decade chart was last updated *before* that specific time period actually ended. In those cases, we scale the points using the ratio of time completed within that period to keep the points fair). _________________ Bluesky · Facebook · Spotify · X

For at least the last three weeks every time I use this site it keeps reloading saying “there was a problem.” It happens on both my iPhone and MacBook, so it can’t be my device. This happens with no other websites.

Apologies, which pages does this happen on? (not using Mac and not seen this on devices I use). Might be specific pages with a problem. _________________ Bluesky · Facebook · Spotify · X

Hey, I’m not who you’re originally responding to but this happens for me too. It can happen on most pages but most frequently on album and chart pages. It can be frustrating trying to arrange a chart and then immediately have to redo the work because the page refreshed (please don’t take this in a hostile tone, just trying to provide the most accurate information and I appreciate the work you’re always putting into the site!)
My guess is it has something to do with the ads and it might have something more to do with my end than the site. Either way, wanted to chime in on the issue. Thanks again! _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

Thanks for extra info. I wasn't aware there were ads on the chart editor page, I'll get those removed now to eliminate this as a possible cause. _________________ Bluesky · Facebook · Spotify · X

On the 'What album are you listening to? ' page I barely have enough time to type in and post an Album because the page keeps reloading. A month ago this wasn't happening.

Apologies for the continuing issue, I've made a couple of background changes which might improve things on the forums (also on the chart editor). Some of the pages on the site are quite lengthy and I think that's partially contributing to the issue on mobile. Going to look at breaking some of the bigger pages down into smaller pieces to make them easier to browse on mobile (particularly album and artist pages etc). _________________ Bluesky · Facebook · Spotify · X
