Another reason to love โThe Bossโ. In 1989, while travelling, Bruce Springsteen called in at Matt's Saloon in Prescott, Arizona and jammed with the house band.
He also donated $100,000 to a barmaid's hospital bill. What a star!
If you are from the UK, and you are of a certain age, this is a very important day in music.
In 1967 (I was nine at the time so perfect for me), the UK's first National pop radio station, BBC Radio 1 was launched to take over from the very successful pirate radio stations, which had been forced off-air. Former pirate DJ Tony Blackburn, from Radio Caroline, was the first presenter on air, with The Move's Flowers In The Rain the first record played.
I just find it funny that one of the greatest rock stars of all time finish second.
In 1945 Elvis Presley made his first ever-public appearance in a talent contest at the Mississippi Alabama Dairy Show singing 'Old Shep', Elvis was 10 years old at the time and came second.
I wonder who won and what happened to them. Did they even appreciate the significance of this achievement years later?
The wonderful Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel died of cancer on this day in 1978 aged 49.
I think that he is a widely unrecognised genius and youโll know many of his songs as they were covered by so many Artists including, Ray Charles, Scott Walker, Alex Harvey, Frank Sinatra, Dusty Springfield, David Bowie, Nina Simone and Terry Jacks.

As a Belgian this is also one of my all-time favorite singers. The way he could deliver a song in his own emotional way was incredible.
Mind you, he is not loved in the whole of Belgium: as a French speaking person he had some kind of a hate/love relationship with Flanders and the Flemish people where he did spend a lot of time.
In Le Plat Pays he expressed his love for the Belgian flat landscape (Wallonia is more hilly) but on the other hand he fiercely attacked the Belgian/Flemish Bourgeoisie in Les Bourgeois. On Les Flamandes he summed up all bad qualities of Flemish women but on Les Flamingants (from 1977) he went full force. Flamingants were historically the Flemish who were on the bad side of history in the Second World War because they thought the Germans would protect them from the Walloon oppression who indeed had the upper hand economically and politically in Belgium at the time. After the war there still was (and is) a far right movement which goes back to that Flemish antagonism against the French speaking population and Brel's song is a bitter comment on that. And the reactions in large parts of the Flemish public and press were as fierce and there was a whole movement against Brel at the time.

Fascinating. didn't know any of that history at all. Thanks for sharing
The third and final studio album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and produced by Jimi, this is his greatest work. The production is exceptional with unique effects developed by Jimi and the band (but mostly Jimi!). I love the experimentation going on here
This is my favourite Experience album
I have always struggled to articulate this album to other people so Iโm going to use the words of other, more eloquent individuals to articulate my thoughts on the album. Hendrix called the tracks on this album โsound paintingsโ and I think that sums up the concept and delivery of the album particularly well. David Stubbs, said that it is "undoubtedly a rock album, albeit rock on the point of evolving into something else." I think thatโs a good description. To have been in his head when he was making this. Where might Jimi have gone if he had lived?
In my words itโs a far-out funky / psychedelic blues album that draws heavily on psychedelia. It feels messy in places and sprawling, maybe even mixed-up and muddled and I love it. There are few albums ever recorded that have as much energy flowing through them as on ladyland.
Itโs an amazing piece of work thatโs essential for anyoneโs record collection
Hadnโt appreciated this until researching this day for any interesting facts. In 1966 The Jimi Hendrix Experience played their first gig as a band supporting French pop star Johnny Hallyday at the Paris Olympia in France.
As I headed into my late teens I wanted to hear a greater selection of music from different genre of music.
Not being part of my group of heavy metal listeners, my mate Steve Hunt was into something rather different. He liked Prog and introduced me to this album. We can argue whether COTC is Prog or not, I don't think that it is but he loved it and I have to admit, I fell in love with it as well from the first listen. Took me into yet another genre of music and bands.
As an aside, I hadn't listened to this album much from the mid 1980's to the early 2000's. I had just started dating this gorgeous blonde at the time (later became my wife and still is) and we were round at a friends house having a great music session, taking it in turn to pick albums. My wife picked COTC and I fell in love with the album again, and her a little more by the end of the evening.
In 1983, Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon marked its 491st week on the Billboard album chart in the US, surpassing the previous record holder, 'Johnny's Greatest Hits' by Johnny Mathis.
When it finally fell off the chart list in October 1988, 'Dark Side' had set a record of 741 weeks on the chart.
