Lemonade (2016) by Beyoncé
I always mentally filed Beyoncé alongside artists like Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran--highly successful mainstream pop stars whose music doesn't appeal to me much at all. This is more out of ignorance than anything else. I've never really listened to Beyoncé. And while there's a long section in the middle of this album that kinda fits my preconceptions (although it's less irritating than Ed Sheeran for instance), this album actually has some decent stuff on it. The first four tracks are very listenable. And All Night is good. But I think Formation is terrible, an awful way to end the album. And that long section of meh isn't doing the album any favors. So, while there are some catchy bits and some good vocals and what-not, on the whole this is just okay. It's not by any means deserving of the massive hype, but it's not bad.

Neurosis. I prefer Souls at Zero, but I think Through Silver in Blood is the consensus pick for their best.

I had originally wanted to get this rated and posted much sooner than I have, but I knew after my first listen that this was an album that isn't to be listened to a couple of times and flippantly discussed. This album asks you to sit down with it and live with it and marinate in its soundscapes for a while. While I can't say it instantly became a favorite album for me, I can clearly see why it is so well regarded and why it holds such a revered place for so many. I just don't fully appreciate it yet, but I still love it. I really enjoyed how in the expanses of instrumentals between lyrical passages that they seemed to intentionally let different instruments come to the fore and be the dominant voice, keeping the arrangement underneath generally sparce rather than flattening you with a wall of rock. I was surprised at how quickly a couple of the songs grew on me and I have a feeling I'll grow to like this album even more the more I listen.

The album that jumps out to me the most on this list is Sometimes I Might Be Introvert by Little Sims, so let's go with that. I'm also curious to see how you'll view it based on some of the general hip hop album ratings you've given that I looked up.

These are the top 10 albums by BEA points from the 50s, 60s, and 70s that I know no songs off of. Since starting my music rating project last year, I have mainly rated albums from the 2020s. I want to get away from that while still discovering music that is new to me.

My first time hearing an atmospheric sludge metal album. Although I'm not the biggest metal fan overall, I think I would prefer this with some of the more atmospheric sections trimmed so that it's closer to straight-up sludge metal. The heavier sections are much better, and I just want to get lost in those guitars. This record really scratched an itch for some angry music today. Even the harsh vocals don't bother me here like they sometimes do. Really well composed and performed, and I'll be returning to this one later. Starting at a light 3.5/5, or 65/100 on BEA.

Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (2021) by Little Simz
Not for me. I don't like the rap. No surprise there. And the beats/instrumental stuff is...I don't know. Nothing special but not bad. And then there are some nice hooks, I guess, but they're so repetitive that after the first couple times they lose all power. The lyrics...nothing special, but not bad for rap. I just don't understand the appeal of hip hop I guess.
And what is with the obsession with wasting listeners' time with interludes on hip hop albums? So annoying.
Some of the songs are decent. E.g. Protect My Energy and Point and Kill, but even then they're not that special and the rest is so mediocre. Little Simz sounds so bored and boring all the time. Every once in a while she puts a bit of emotion in her voice, and I'm like yeah, do that more! But then she just goes back to her boring vocal style again.
All in all, unremarkable. Nothing special. Forgettable. But not actively bad for the most part.

By coincidence, I was listening to some Minor Threat today, so let's go with that.
