Now Pat's What I Call Music! - Music Diaries

Patman360 · 2024-09-05T19:05:38-04:00

Arguably the stupidest thing I've done on here since I ranked all the Bond theme songs, but I'm back to having time for music so I'm setting out on a new venture! Yes, that's right, listening to and ranking the Now That's What I Call Music! albums, one track at time. I recently got shown a full playlist of all the Now albums and it brought up a lot of nostalgia (the 50's/60's Now album were early albums for me in my musical journey...). Anyway, while digging through the list I came across several bangers (and several 'non-bangers'), and it's inspired to dig through the archives, one song a day, every day, for the foreseeable future. Am I crazy? Yes, absolutely, but anyway, let's crack on! 1 Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9IwBJYTwQ0 Starting us off in 1983, with the original version of Now, is Phil Collins's covering The Supremes, quite enjoy this a lot in all honesty. Have been on a bit of a Genesis rediscovery journey of late and naturally that leads into Phil and his solo stuff. The man does make a good pop hit every so often (Easy Lover, dope), and I love the fact that he doesn't look remotely like a popstar (strikes me as more of an Eastenders character, plus he's got the name). Was on his 1982 album, Hello, I Must Be Going, which has made it onto a year chart of mine, and anyway, as the first song up, straight to number one with a bullet. Ranking: 1. Phil Collins -You Can't Hurry Love (Now 1)

Cathy Dennis - Waterloo Sunset

Link

The second single off Cathy Dennis' 3rd and final album, before turning to a career in songwriting, Waterloo Sunset is obviously a Kinks cover, and a song I enjoy dearly.

Weirdly, I watched the film BlackBerry (the one about the phones) literally yesterday, and they ended the movie with the original of this (due to the setting of Waterloo in Canada).

Anyway, a good song.

The Divine Comedy - Everybody Knows (Except You)

Link

I can dive in on this one for sure, The Divine Comedy are essentially Neil Hannon, the only consistent member, from Fermanagh on the Northern Irish side of the border here in Ireland.

Hannon's got this nice smooth style of orchestral like pop going on in a lot of their albums, this being off their 5th, A Short Album About Love.

One of the more poppier and successful hits, the Divine Comedy still are releasing music and still get lots of playtime here.

Plus Hannon wrote the theme song to Father Ted, which we still air regularly on Irish tv and is a timeless comedy.

Alisha's Attic - Indestructible

Link

Completely new to me, kind of like a modern Everything But The Girl, not particularly doing a lot for me.

Alisha's Attic were a duo consisting of 2 sisters, and had 3 albums from the late 90's into the early 00's, before moving instead towards a career in songwriting.

A solid-ish pop song, one of Ant & Dec's last singles before the tv career become the priority.

Sash! - Encore Une Fois

Link

Very much Eurodance here, German DJ group Sash! had quite a bit of success of their debut album It's My Life in 1997.

This was the album's second single and did very well, hitting number 1 in Ireland even, and I honestly think it still holds up well, despite my misgivings with this type of dance music usually.

Really fun even now.

DJ Quicksilver - Bellissima

Link

This one however, hasn't held up very well.

DJ Quicksilver is a German-Turkish DJ who had a few hits, this being one of the biggest, floating somewhere between trance and house I guess.

Back to not being in my scene.
