Now Pat's What I Call Music! - Music Diaries

Patman360 · 2024-09-05T19:05:38-04:00

Arguably the stupidest thing I've done on here since I ranked all the Bond theme songs, but I'm back to having time for music so I'm setting out on a new venture! Yes, that's right, listening to and ranking the Now That's What I Call Music! albums, one track at time. I recently got shown a full playlist of all the Now albums and it brought up a lot of nostalgia (the 50's/60's Now album were early albums for me in my musical journey...). Anyway, while digging through the list I came across several bangers (and several 'non-bangers'), and it's inspired to dig through the archives, one song a day, every day, for the foreseeable future. Am I crazy? Yes, absolutely, but anyway, let's crack on! 1 Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9IwBJYTwQ0 Starting us off in 1983, with the original version of Now, is Phil Collins's covering The Supremes, quite enjoy this a lot in all honesty. Have been on a bit of a Genesis rediscovery journey of late and naturally that leads into Phil and his solo stuff. The man does make a good pop hit every so often (Easy Lover, dope), and I love the fact that he doesn't look remotely like a popstar (strikes me as more of an Eastenders character, plus he's got the name). Was on his 1982 album, Hello, I Must Be Going, which has made it onto a year chart of mine, and anyway, as the first song up, straight to number one with a bullet. Ranking: 1. Phil Collins -You Can't Hurry Love (Now 1)

And this brings us to the very end of NOW 36!

A strong album overall, but definitely a drop off at the end, another dance track that's wasted on me here.

Anyway, we jump forward to July 1997 tomorrow, NOW 37!

Eternal - I Wanna Be The Only One (feat. BeBe Winans)

Link

I've been very harsh on Eternal in the past but this is definitely their big hit, the 4th single off their 3rd album.

Don't know why I find it so good, but it really took things up another notch from them.

Really good R&B pop.

The Cardigans - Lovefool

Link

Been on the road for a bit so gonna be a brief 4 here.

Starting with Swedish band, the Cardigans, and their big hit, helped in part by Romeo + Juliet.

I like it a bit, but not in loving it territory to lift it higher.

The opening single of No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom back in 1995, it actually a re-release in 1997.

And personally I prefer it to Don't Speak also.

Another one of those scenarios where I don't massively like the genre, but I think this a pretty decent effort at it.

No Mercy - Where Do You Go

Link

A cover of an earlier Eurodance track by La Bouche, Where Do You Go was the debut single by German/American pop group No Mercy, and one with a more latin flavour despite all that.

Decent, and one that still gets a lot of playtime.

Spice Girls - Who Do You Think You Are

Link

Having opened the past 3 Now albums, the Spice Girls were demoted this time around.

However it's still a really good pop hit, actually this was only the B-side to Mama but I think it's the stronger pop song anyway.

The last single coming off their debut album

Ultra Naté - Free

Link

A bizarre one, one of those ones you know but you can't place when asked what it is.

This is still on the radio, a lot, here anyway.

It's a solid discopop song but I know little about it, even if Ultra Naté, a singer from Maryland, still seems to have a big following.

This was off her 3rd album back in 1997 and has seemingly held up popularity wise over time.
