I've heard both, and they're both pretty good. Personally, I prefer the Manic Street Preachers version. Much more "raw". I'm not as crazy about The The's version, the production feels kinda dopey and it's a bit too generically new wave for my taste. _________________ A dick that's bigger than the sun.
I know what you're going through. I used to think that The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan was called The Freewillin' Bob Dylan, because it rhymes and makes more sense and let's be honest is an all around better title. Still, you just gotta adjust. I have an original vinyl copy too and it is indeed Remain in Light. Sorry. :?

well im not sure if english is your first language, but freewillin' is suppose to be like "free willing". like the Rush song, you know? as in one who makes their own decisions and doesn't let fate decide things for them. and bob is saying that kind of life style describes himself in the title (even though it isn't even the title). you get what i'm saying?
English is not my first language, but I don't know whether I should consider Urdu a proper "first language", because I'm speaking English more often now, but anyway, I do get what you're saying, and here's what I say:
1. I just don't like the sound of "Freewillin'" more than "Freewheelin'".
2. "Freewheelin'" means the same thing that, as you say, "Freewillin'" means, so it suits the album's title.
3. There isn't any word "freewilling".
4. There isn't any song by Rush called "Freewilling" either, if I remember correctly. It's only "Free will", I think. I may have to look that one up. :-k

heck no you didn't win! i could understand that you'd find this confusing if english isn't your first language. but believe me! it's the better title! freewheelin' does mean pretty much the same thing, but to me isn't as good a title. "The Freewillin' Bob Dylan" rhymes, and the fact that it's a corruption kind of goes along with his "i don't care, i'm gonna play by my own rules" personality as well.
Now, now, this has nothing to do with the English language! I understand what you're saying, but even if it rhymes, a rhyme doesn't always sound the best, especially in this case. Your second point, though, is really good. 👏
In the end, I guess, it's only a matter of how you look at it, and what it sounds like to you. For example, some people may prefer "Remain in the light" to "Remain in light".
