|
When I say soundtrack, I don't necessarily mean songs that described your situation at the time, just songs you couldn't get enough of.
My teenage years had four distinct phases in music. (Lots of shame involved here)

Island in the Sun - Weezer
First Date - Blink-182
The Chronicles of Life and Death - Good Charlotte
Bring Me to Life - Evanescence
All Star - Smash Mouth
Perfect - Simple Plan
(There's Gotta Be) More to Life - Stacie Orrico
Punk Rock 101 - Bowling for Soup
In Too Deep - Sum 41
15
Schism - Tool
Grand Theft Autumn/Where is Your Boy? - Fall Out Boy
Nobody's Listening - Linkin Park
Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off - Panic! At the Disco
Vindicated - Dashboard Confessional
Miss Murder - AFI
Did My Time - Korn
Jesus of Suburbia - Green Day
Porcelain - Red Hot Chili Peppers
17
Jambi - Tool
Working Class Hero - John Lennon
Eraser - Nine Inch Nails
Beast of Burden - The Rolling Stones
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Last Caress - The Misfits
Asleep - The Smiths
The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat) - The Doors
Tired of Being Alone - Al Green
Most of the Time - Bob Dylan
19

I'll answer with albums. The one's that immediately come to mind are:
Quadrophenia- The Who
The Violent Femmes- The Violent Femmes (might be the ultimate teenage album)
London Calling! - The Clash (I'm Down was sort of an anthem for me)
Snap!- The Jam
Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
The Queen is Dead and Louder than Bombs- The Smiths
Girls Girls Girls (compilation)- Elvis Costello and the Attractions
pretty much everything up through Green- R.E.M.
pretty much everything through The Joshua Tree- U2
Warehouse: Songs and Stories- Husker Du
Pleased to Meet Me- The Replacements
Mania and All the Stuff and More vol.1 - The Ramones
I Just Can't Stop It- The English Beat (one of the first CD's I ever bought)

Prepare for an amazing journey of my teenage years
13: Nothing
14: Nothing
15:
Gorillaz - Demon Days (Got this a few days after my fifteenth birthday)
Gorillaz - Gorillaz (Got this at market in Exmouth on summer holiday)
Athlete - Tourist (Favorite album ever for a while!)
Green Day - American Idiot
Green Day - International Superhits!
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
Franz Ferdinand - Self titled
The Prodigy - Greatest Hits
A hell of a lot of Kerrang! Radio
Cds for 15th Christmas:
Alkaline Trio - Crimson
Gorillaz - G-Sides
16:
Gorillaz - Demon Days
Fall Out Boy - From Under The Cork tree ("Nobody Puts Baby in The Corner" reminds me of revising for GSCE's)
Fall Out Boy - Take This To Your Grave (Got my copy from Bournmouth, while shopping for this album I noticed an album which casing was a small tin circle. Was extremely intrigued by it and thought about getting it. I could have had for 2 for £10 but opted for Prodigy's "...Jilted Generation" instead. Looking back I made the right choice)
Franz Ferdinand - Elanor Put Your Boots on
From First To Last - Dear Diary...
Panic! At The Disco - A Fever You Can't Sweat Out (Inspired me to write my first song. It was during listening to this album once that I decided "Hey! Wait a second, Illegal Downloading is wrong." It also once inspired me to write a play which is still unfinished. All of that is true.)
Rise Against - Siren Song For The Counter Culture
Muse - Blacks Holes and Revelations
Radiohead - Ok Computer (Even then 'Lucky' and 'The Tourist' sounded bad)
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Greatest Hits
Dresden Dolls - Yes Virginia...
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
The Human League - Greatest Hits
R.E.M. - Automatic For The People (Unfairly thrown out my collection along with much of the above. I got a second hand copy late 2009 which I have given a fair amount of listens. I couldn't believe I had gotten rid of it because I deemed it "immature" when punk and it's questionable cause hit town)
Cds for 16th Christmas:
The Long Blondes - Someone To Drive You Home (Need to dust this one off)
The Blood Arm - Lie Lover Lie (very odd choice)
17:
A lot of the above for the first two months.
I brought a lot of NME back then. By a lot I mean roughly every week. I would buy albums if they had a score of 8 or over. That was the way things were and legendary albums they recommended I got them.
I was 16 and 362 days old (I think) when I went to Keswick in the Lake District. I had been many times before but this time I found a shop which sold odd antiques. So naturally I went further back the shop and there I discovered it sold CDs. Each day that holiday I would come back and buy a new one. More holiday money took a beating
That week NME the front cover was '50 Greatest "Indie" Anthems' or something to that degree. I had no problem with "indie" back then and Live Forever by Oasis was number 1. In the article they had a part showing ten songs that didn't make the cut. Some I heard, some I hadn't. One I hadn't was called 'Motorcycle Emptiness'. The day after reading the article I was back in the shop and stumbled upon a copy of 'Forever Delayed'. I brought it, went back home, listened, didn't recognize 'Motorcycle Emptiness' and listen to 'A Design For Life' a few times then put it on the massive pile of cds I had listened to that holiday.
I don't remember what happened after that. I think a few weeks back home I listened to it. Then again, then again. Before September I had every album but Gold Against The Soul, Know Your Enemy and Lifeblood.
I became infatuated with The Holy Bible (album). Got Gold Against the Soul sometime in October I think. I think The Holy Bible effected me in someway. Like those emo/scene kids who were all okay before changing their appearance and suddenly strive so hard to fit in they ravage their minds with depression. I sometimes wonder if The Holy Bible wasn't a refuge for that time in my life but instead engulfed me. I think listening to The Holy Bible was the cause, not the effect. I wouldn't recommend it.
Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
Manic Street Preachers - Gold Against The Soul
Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists
Manic Street Preachers - Everything Must Go
Manic Street Preachers - Send Away The Tigers
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables
Sparks - Best Of
Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
No Doubt - The Singles
Mansun - Six
Cds for 17th Christmas:
Sparks - Best Of
Manic Street Preachers - Lifeblood
Manic Street Preachers - Know Your Enemy (didn't get it till april though)
Manic Street Preachers - Lipstick Traces
The Clash - Singles

Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists
Manic Street Preachers - Everything Must Go
Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
Manic Street Preachers - Know Your Enemy
The Clash - The Clash

Divine Comedy - Cassanova
Keane - Spiraling (Must have had it on repeat 900 times)
Flobots - Handlebars (Maybe 450 for this one)
The Cribs - Men's needs...
No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom
Rush - Retrospective 1
Faith No More - Angel Dust
Cds for 18th Christmas:

It's weird how I like a lot of what Naples listened to as a teenager and I wasn't even born yet. I think those of you who argue music is generational are mostly wrong.
Outlaw: How could you not have listened to music at ages 13 and 14? I first became a music fan when I was eight, and music was a huge part of my life throughout all the teen years. Anyways, thanks for sharing your epic journey with us.
