The Disintegration Loops by William Basinski
Chart: Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by dividesbyzero
Rank on User's Chart: 4
Year: 2012
Rank on BEA Overall: 2,158
Average Rating: 82/100
Chart Notes:
"For the longest time, I believed that this album was talked about mostly just for the interesting story of its creation (and a damn interesting story it is). What I didn't realize until fairly recently is that The Disintegration loops, even if somewhat aleatorically composed, is a work of genius. Formed out of the progressive decomposition of Basinski's prior work, every track on The Disintegration loops slowly fades into oblivion as the track progresses, taking the listener with it. This album is an undeniably interesting listen, which is exactly why I hate it. Yes, I hate this album, because I'll put on my ambient playlist, hoping to study without getting distracted by the music, and then The Disintegration Loops comes on and I know I am fucked. I want to put this on in the background, but I found myself unable, as I can't help but try to seek out every change in composition with each repeating loop. And yes I know that the version I have listed here is technically a compilation consisting of all three series of loops in addition to two live renditions of two of the loops. If you're interested, my favorite series of loops is II, but I included the above because the two live loops at the end I enjoy just as much if not more than the original recordings"

I've tried this time and time again and just can't get into it. I'll keep trying though.

^This^

Honestly, one of the few albums that I can say substantially changed my perspective of life and art. And I remember just being completely engrossed, mesmerized, and spiritually touched by the first loop the first time I heard it. I was in awe that the cycle of life could so simply and artfully be not just represented, but actually CAPTURED in a piece of music. These recordings are just about the most miraculous recordings of all time.

I listened to the first track once, it was very good. Haven't listened to any of the other loops though.
