I really think an album's worth can come from how it influenced other artists. about 99% of all popular (or even not so popular music) wouldn't exist if there wasn't an album or a song or a riff or even a chord which inspired it. What do you think are the most inspiring or influential albums in existence. If you feel the need to say why, do so. Personally I'd have to say:

1: Dark Side of The Moon, Pink Floyd - Ushered in the phase of wide spread popularity of Long songs and Prog rock. Suddenly alternative music was popular. Spawned several smaller bands that tried to create their own Floydesque sound. There have been so many small time bands which would of been influenced from this album, countless. Everyone from Beck to Muse to Radiohead. Plus it popularized the Concept album, making it an almost boorish affair.

2: Hard Days Night, The Beatles - That first Chhuuuuung really changed and controlled the mood of popular rock music for the next decade. The 12 string guitar of Harrison gave The Beatles it's jangly sound and the increasing harmonies of the vocals set the Beatles up as an incredibly influential musical artist in all genres.

3: Elvis Presley, Elvis Presley - I don't like the album, but you can't deny its influence. This song put guitar centre stage for Rock music. It bridged the gap between Blues and Rock and defined Rock and Roll.

4: The Velvet Underground and Nico, The Velvet Underground - This abum (and the band) spawned so many different genres from just a few tracks. It made music an art form. It wasn't popular in its time but it sure as hell made an impact.

5: Tommy, The Who - This was an album that inspired albums that inspired albums. It pretty much created the Rock Opera genre which influenced massively popular operas in turn. The Wall, Quadrophenia (Also by The Who). This list can go on.

Opinions?

Here is one I never personally understood. Many people just like you say things like this, some give bigger claims, so it is obviously influential. I listened to it and couldn't help feel underwhelmed. To albums that came afterwords were better, although I may of thought that because I was going into them with a lot of less expectation (I listened to them first too.) It might also be because they didn't have Nico.

Thinking about it, I have a new idea for a thread. Although I thought about it earlier but reading this has made me want to talk about it. Razz

I think that Wazzup's list is a good start and Cartoken is spot on...also, you have to remember that before AOR (Album oriented radio) hit in 1967, 45's were where the evolution of rock was happening so I would include the single "Talk Talk" by Music Machine, 1966, as one of the first punk/alternative records as I heard things from 1960 -1967....and very influential...one could also make a case for "You really got me", 1964, the Kinks as the first punk record.
