God this is unfair. Two of my favorite records of the entire decade. And hell, Eno even plays on this Nico album. This is the 2nd tournament where my John Cale related pick gets pitted against Eno in the first round.
I can't say enough good things about Taking Tiger Mountain. It may be my second favorite Eno album of 1974, but the first is way up on my overall chart. He's got a band here that includes Phil Manzanera and Robert Wyatt. Surprisingly no Fripp.

Eno's a God. It's that simple. Even if he had never done anything beyond his Art Pop stage, I would revere him. Here Come The Warm Jets, this and Another Green World are all essential masterpieces, and nothing else before or since sounds like them. I'm in the small but vocal camp that only wishes he'd continue to crank out pop like this (with the condition that he would still make his ambient records, of course.)
Bright Lights is an absolute masterpiece that deserves more attention than it gets. "The Cavalry Cross" is on several of my personal playlists.
I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight...

I enjoyed Libertango, but I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight is one of my favourite albums of all-time. I just adore Richard Thompson. I've seen him live on numerous occasions, and he never disappoints. And, along with Unhalfbricking, this album is his best work. I just love the way it manages to recall some Olde English time, as though the pair are heading down Gin Lane to get absolutely battered, maybe with a couple of pigs for bartering. And the guitar work throughout is just fantastic, nobody managed to define "folk-rock" as well as Thompson did, literally taking old English folk melodies and working them seamlessly into a decidedly rock template. Then there's the sincere, unpretentious, simple beauty of their voices, never trying to be something they aren't or do something they can't. 'Withered and Died' is just stunning. Eh, most of this album is just stunning. There's a melancholy air to it, but it's not a resigned melancholy, it's something more urgent - not anger or frustration. I can't put my finger on it, but this album sort of reminds me of being fully prepared to spend a day in bed, sad at the world, only for the sun to poke through your window and convince you to get yourself down to the pub pronto. I'm talking bollocks, but I'd be happy to see this album win the whole tournament.

Linda Thompson's voice is amazing, Richard's playing is awesome. The celtic flavor is just delightful. I can see listening to IWTSTBLT over and over again.
Richard and Linda, again. Not many albums in this tournament that are better. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

This.
Eno is great and this is no exception, but there are very few albums I'd put above I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight, and that's with regards to all time, not just 1974. _________________

These are both 5 star masterpieces, and I love them both in dramatically different ways. I'll be doing a coin toss later. ๐
I'm just going to get used to the fact that most of these matches are pretty much going to suck balls from herein out. So many kickass albums. For instance, I can't believe Red's gone, but I adore Meet The Residents almost as much.
Will probably go with Eno since he's my God and TTM is an Art Pop marvel, but I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight is such a diverse, beautiful album.
