Basically, I'm playing through Fallout New Vegas again, and I've already listened to all the built-in radio songs infinite times, so I tried playing music of my own which fit the ambience well. So far, the best fit is F#A# by GYBE, but Acid Mothers Temple and Johnny Cash also work. What other albums you reckon would fit the general theme?

I usually try to listen to the videogame's music when it's important - fitting - part of the experience, but when it's not that relevant I try to find music from my own library which fits the ambience. Any of you do that? Do you have any albums which fit perfectly with certain games? Also, do you do the opposite - take a video game soundtrack and listen to it outside of the game?

I personally love Katamari Fortissimo Damacy, and I also listen to Mario Kart tunes while stuck on traffic.

I played TES: Oblivion for 8 hours once with this on loop:

The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull by Earth

The pretty drone stuff almost made it a haunting kind of dragging experience and I did it with Skyrim recently which worked pretty well. For Fallout I tend to want to spin "50s tag radio/golden oldies, etc." though.

Done Dragon Age 2 with

Music For 18 Musicians (1998) by Steve Reich

Antichamber with

Nattvittje by Mikael Karlsson

and Hotline Miami with a few different albums that work alright, but I kind of liked

Stankonia by OutKast

Done a few other similar things time to time but these were some of my favorites.

Hm, not a video game, but I love to watch Blue Planet on silent while listening to stoner metal.

Evanescence's "Bring Me to Life" is excellent for Metroid Prime bosses.

I often play chess with a friend (not a videogame but wtf) where there's music going on, and then often he doesn't know the songs but tries to sing along regardless, and especially if it's a song with lots of rap and tough words, his attempts at singing along sounds so dumb that I'm unable to concentrate on chess, and then I fuck up my game and he wins (although it sure doesn't help me that he's like an infinitely better chess player than me (he's probably not very good at chess))

I don't think that song is excellent for anything. Neutral Let alone one of the greatest video game trilogies of all time.

That's nothing. One of the kids I teach dances the whole time he plays.
