Which greatest hits albums in your collection eclipse anything from the artists discography, in your opinion?

Tricky! Personally I've not rated any of my Greatest Hits collections on this site and I have nearly 200 of them, not because I don't like them (I do) but feel this site should be for albums the were created as stand alone works.

I'm thinking Rotten Apples - Smashing Pumpkins, Singles Collection - Gorillaz, Reasons To Be Cheerful - Ian Dury, Mothership - Led Zeppelin, Complete Madness, The Sound of the Smiths, Queen GH1.

None can be considered classics like individual albums can but all these led me to want to buy studio albums after, apart from Smashing Pumpkins (which were already owned).

I would say (not one of these have one bad track)
- Between Thought and Expression by Lou Reed: CD's carefully selected with comments from the master himself containing all his best work except for his latest
- Girls! Girls! Girls! By Elvis Costello: again many many of his best songs chosen by himself
- Substance By New Order because it consists of long vers.ions of their best hits and is enough to get a grasp on their best songs

I wouldn't choose Greatest hits where only a few main albums are represented: ex One Step Beyond by Madness is nearly better than Complete Madness

Jim Croce's Photographs and Memories is better than his regular albums. Not that his regular albums aren't good. They are, but the greatest hits album is simply better.

I also really like Genesis's 3-disc Platinum Collection. It covers the best of both Gabriel and Collins. But I cannot say for sure if I like it more than any regular Genesis albums because I haven't listened to most of them.

Same thing with Eagles. Their Greatest Hits is terrific, but I've only listened to two of their regular albums so I can't say if the Greatest Hits is better than all the rest.

I enjoy listening to these greatest hits collections as much, if not more than any album by these artists:

Greatest Hits by Sly and the Family Stone

Legend by Bob Marley And The Wailers

Greatest Hits by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Greatest Hits I & II by Queen

Also, not sure if this counts, but these live albums I like as much if not more than their studio albums, not only because I like these bands live, but also because it is a more interesting collection of tracks and also a type of compilation.

8/25/00 โ€“ Jones Beach, New York by Pearl Jam
