No, but seriously, Ghostface completely owns to an almost unprecedented degree on supreme clientele. I'd say the rapping on The Cold Vein is not on the same level. At least to my ears. The production is pretty equal, just totally different. I love the soulfulness of Supreme Clientele's beats personally more than the abstract, kinda hazy out of this world beats on The Cold Vein. Supreme Clientele ... man it's just soooooooo gooooooooood thoooooouuuuuugh! _________________ -Ryan
I don't think anybody ever rapped as well as Ghostface did on Supreme Clientele, and those broken soul beats are astounding. Of course, The Cold Vein is amazing as well, and painted in entirely different shades of grey. The both convey a different, skewed image of a semi-fictional New York - the former being the nostalgic ramblings of a hopped-up crack dealer, the latter being the apocalyptic warnings of a half-crazed street preacher - but both come from and define the same place, that grimy New York underbelly that has been a hotbed for so much great music, hip-hop or otherwise. That said, my preference is for Supreme Clientele - it could be my number one (it and Cuban Linx are pretty much interchangeable at this point, basically the peak of their genre and of all pop music). But whatever. My vote goes to Supreme Clientele, and my feeling is that it should win the whole tournament. However, if it's to go out at this stage then it could be to much worse opposition than the frightening, almost otherworldly - I say almost because of the fact that they are completely and resolutely of this world - Cannibal Ox and El-P.
But do vote for Supreme Clientele, because it is better. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
This is probably the closest round yet for me. Both are great albums that just miss god tier for me, but I give it to Cannibal Ox by the tiniest of distances, and I'll probably regret that tomorrow. I think the execution on Supreme Clientelle is actually a little better, Cannibal Ox is just more my style, if that makes sense. Both great albums that would almost certainly be top 25 hip-hop releases for me. _________________
