been browsing about recently and noticed a pretty big loss of this site's old familiar faces, and having made my account back in 2011 im now officially a member of the "old guard" (coming up on half a decade now jesus fucking christ).

let's talk fondly/unfondly about the past, and create a tangible BEA timeline; understand how the site works, worked, and how events on an off the site shaped its future.

first off: who misses gary and naples? a lot of people apparently, this website's activity peaked around right before they were banned. is it possible that bea's confrontational nature and drama was what was actually drawing people to the site, as opposed to the then-over-curated threads. and what do you guys make of these dips in the site's traffic on specific months?

edit: in all seriousness tho even though there are more and less active periods for the site, BEA "golden ages" are purely imaginary. This place is always pretty dope tbh

if u look again u will see that the poll is ironical and such

my interest in the site's traffic doesn't really have to do with a bea "golden age" (golden ages are all relative - i liked the period i joined bcus i think the site was funnier, and the contests were more intense, and likely because i was freer to use the site more at the time), i'm less interested in that than just why the site's traffic peaked when it did, what lead to its decline*, etc

likely to do with them banning that jackwc guy

ah ok I get ya. Hmm could be just a natural fluctuation? Or maybe we just had more shitstorms back then and people liked to watch who knows

Don't believe in there being a golden age of BEA, but for each individual, the experience can be the best when the timing is right and the right people (like-minded individuals or proper antagonists) are posting. Lots of fun users having left combined with things going on in my life made it that I'm certainly less eager to come around anymore. Don't particularly miss Naples or GARY though. Or JMan. That Jackwc fuck, maybe...

There does seem to be less traffic on the forums these days, even if this is probably not true for the site as a whole. Maybe it's the negative effects of the implementation of the suicide booth aka option to delete your account with a click of a button.

Gonna be honest, that and tournaments were 90% of my motivating factor to stay around for my early days.

I don't remember any shitstorms. We've always gotten along famously.

My interest in BEA has declined significantly in the last six months or so -- many of the most engaging personalities have stopped posting regularly. Decreased use of the lounge means that we don't really get to know the new users in the way that we used to, unfortunately.

As for music, the tastes of the site's regulars have become increasingly esoteric and discussion of even the p4k mainstream is often treated with disdain, so I expect this scares away a lot of users not interested in devoting many hours a day to listening to new music. The main reason I stick around is that I am one of the people that does that. ๐Ÿ˜œ

None of the other places I've seen offer the same combination of a small, everybody-knows-each-other community with this level of music knowledge, so I'm not expecting to leave anytime soon... but yeah, if BEA had a golden age, it has long since passed for me.

Yeah, I guess this is true for me too. I think all it takes is a couple good new users to bring the forums back to life a bit. We've lost a few regulars to jobs, university, more interesting lives, etc. I think a lot of the action went to Plug.dj for a while. I know I found myself there with many regulars while my posting on BEA declined. With Plug gone it's been tough to get that same energy to return. I do think the brilliant Music Diaries subforum addition has brought back a load of excitement that had been lost.
