All bands have their influences, some more obvious than others. I was trying to explain The Deftones to someone the other day and said they're basically like the Cure and Faith No More added together, which got me thinking, how many other bands could this apply to? Here's a few off the top of my head I came up with:
Faith No More + The Cure = Deftones
Weezer + Death Cab For Cutie = Built To Spill
Soundgarden + Rage Against The Machine = Audioslave
Radiohead + Jeff Buckley = Muse
Foo Fighters + Coldplay = Feeder
Oasis + Primal Scream = Kasabian
and of course:
Pixies + Boston = Nirvana (Smells Like Teen Spirit)
and one i'm not sure of (any suggestions?):
Joy Division + ??? = Interpol
Anyone else have any to add? _________________ "Bunch of opinionated, hipster twats!"

I like the theory. I think the second one is way off for the fact that Built to Spill predated Death Cab for Cutie by six or seven years. You could do the math with Death Cab for Cutie being the sum, but personally, I don't hear any Weezer in their sound. As for Muse, I think you're missing Queen as an obvious influence. I would say it's Radiohead + Queen. I don't think you can boil it down to two bands though most of the time. Some bands do sound a lot like one or two bands, but there are other influences in there. Elvis Costello, for example, had a myriad of influences.

fair point. My idea was bands that had 2 obvious influences (to the listener rather than the band themselves). I could have bored my mate all day with 100's of influences for Deftones, but those 2 summed their sound up quite well. Also I didn't think about whether the influences pre-dated the influenced band or not, but i see what you mean in regards to BTS. Also, I skipped over Queen as an influence for Muse as i absolutely dispise them, but it's interesting to see other people's opinion for the same bands. _________________ "Bunch of opinionated, hipster twats!"
I'm not a Justin Bieber fan, but I have to say that he doesn't deserve to be compared to the talentless trash that is Rebecca Black. Bieber's big problem is taste; he actually doesn't sing that bad, and he can play three instruments (piano, guitar, and drums).
You can compare Charlie N. George to Rebecca Black if you really want to, but don't hurt the fragile little kid. ๐
