I feel bit weird to open this thread the day of Bowie's death.

...

Anyone excited about the new Explosions in the sky ?

For me, this is a small consolation...

I mean, I'll listen to it, but as far as I'm concerned (The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place notwithstanding), Explosions in the Sky are the face of "formulaic post-rock". Virtually every album of theirs follows a pretty predictable formula and sounds virtually the same. I don't hate the stuff, but in my opinion, there's better post-rock out there.

There's also way worse.

Oh, no doubt. I don't have any kind of hatred for EITS, they're fine and all, I just think they get over-hyped.

Exactly my problem with Explosions. I really enjoyed them at first, but it's grown kind of tiresome over multiple records.

As a huge EITS fan, here's a short appreciation of there albums :

How Strange, Innonence (2000) : One of the most underrated post-rock album of all-time
Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever (2001) : Interesting.
The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place (2003) : A masterpiece.
The Rescue (2005) : Another time, one of the most underrated post-rock album of all-time
All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone (2007) : Very good.
Take Care, Take Care, Take Care (2011) : Repetitive and a bit overproduced.

Unfortunately, the new single sounds more like Take Care, Take Care than The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place ...

They've made two good soundtracks with David Wingo for average to good repertory cinema movies.

How do you like their albums with David Wingo ?

Looking forward to it.

Those Who Tell The Truth... and The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place are both excellent. I liked the follow-ups, but wouldn't have cared if it weren't for albums 2 and 3. Their re-released debut is okay, as is The Rescue.
