I'm curious what you think of this topic. My personal feeling is, I don't like it when bands sound too much like their influences. This is why I don't like Muse, for example. It's inevitable that bands are going have influences and those influences will come out in the music, but it's important for bands to absorb a lot of influences and create their own identity. When I hear a band that sounds a lot like another band, they better be as good or better than their predecessor. Otherwise, I have no interest. What do you all think of originality? What role does it play in your enjoyment of the music?
I LIEK DOOM METAL. DA MOAR IT SOUNDZ LIEK SABBATH, DA MOAR IT GOOD LOLOLOL
Really, it's not that originality makes an album good. It's just that it opens you up to something brand new. Every band should have something that sets them apart; in Muse's case, that's "Queen-izing" Radiohead.
I agree it's incredibly important I mean the percentage of artists that are trying to make it and the percentage that we end up hearing is like 10:1 or something and so you're point about identity is incredibly accurate and that is why originality is important - if you want to make it, set yourself apart. This is why I can not understand why the strokes have any sort of following (I just heard Angles yesterday so they're fresh in mind again) I find 0 appeal in them because they have 0 originality (Incidentally if anyone hasn't listened to tUnE-yArDs "w h o k i l l" do. the first word that comes into your head will be 'originality').
And I know I've obviously made my feelings clear on the guy (you must have watched the video you posted, how do you not want to just punch him in the throat? (and this is coming from a anti-violence person!) however I do like his point about the word being used too much in terms of have you 'heard every piece of music like that' etc.
Without wanting to be rude, I think it's a bit hypocritical from you, Jhereko, when you say that "no originality" is why you don't like the Strokes, and why you don't get their popularity.. I mean you do like Coldplay, LCD Soundsystem, Cut Copy (,...) right?. These bands are (IMO) just as derivative and "unoriginal" as The Strokes, but you enjoy them more (don't get me wrong, I do too), whatever the reason might be.. For me, it's this:

The reason why I personally love The Strokes, is exactly that - I feel they improved on whatever they were influenced by (obviously, you don't feel that way).. I mean it's hard to be in today's rock bands and try to make "original" music, because everything in this genre (and I mean the standard "vocals-guitar-bass-drums" rock genre) has already been sort-of done (it's not just rock music of course, but it's probably the most obvious one).. In my opinion, The Strokes were able to set themselves apart from the other "standard" rock music - their songs are catchy, "fun", replayable, [I can't think of anything else to say],...
And I also think that Coldplay set themselves apart from the other bands that derived from Radiohead's late 1990s sound. (But that doesn't mean that they were really original, they just did it better)

fair call in some ways I guess. But I still see the three you mentioned at least as taking those obvious influences and turning it into something new. not something I can hear The Strokes doing but I've come to accept somewhat that it is just my ears.

listen to Royal Trux's Twin Infinitives: original and shitty
(for those who haven't noticed, I have a vendetta against this album)
Heard of the album yet haven't heard anything from it. If I see it on the shelves tomorrow for a few pound I would get it. I heard it is a classic so I better give it a spin
I don't care much for originality. If an album is good, I'll appreciate it. That's why cover versions exist. Sure, original albums are hard to come by because they're hard to make, but if we get rid of originality, music won't be made in a few years time. _________________ Doubles & Conch
