Haven't listened to it in a while, but I remember it being good. _________________

The first time I listened to this album, I remember thinking that it was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I had ever heard. I had it on repeat for almost a month. The only negative thing I would say is that "It Was A Pleasure Then" drags a bit. _________________ Join us in the canon game / Add me on RYM

An equal with Desertshore IMO; as confident in its pop as the latter is in its abstraction.

Mm hmm, I'd agree with this but I certainly prefer Desertshore. Although on this Nico really captures the rawness of her vocals and Desertshore is a little more refined vocally (which certainly isn't bad when the product of which is belters like "JAAAAAAANITOR OF LUUUUNACYYYYYYYY"). _________________

I don't know how "confident" it could be said Chelsea Girl ultimately was given that virtually every desire of Nico's was quashed in the process of making it. I'm with Nico on disowning this one. The rest of her catalog is rock solid, even genius, but this is lacking in more ways than one.

You're totally right.
"I still cannot listen to it, because everything I wanted for that record, they took it away. I asked for drums, they said no. I asked for more guitars, they said no. And I asked for simplicity, and they covered it in flutes! [...] They added strings and – I didn't like them, but I could live with them. But the flute! The first time I heard the album, I cried and it was all because of the flute."—Nico
Yet despite this, I still love Chelsea Girl as much as anything she ever did, most likely due to the excellent songwriting provided to her by Dylan, Browne and Reed. Her next 3 records are all grander statements aesthetically, but i find it hard not to love this set of songs. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

I think it's lovely. I didn't know Nico was so down on it, but I doubt that will change my view of it going forward. Her baggage need not be mine -- once art is released to the world, it takes on a life of its own in each person that listens.
